The Student Development and Engagement component of TITLE-V consists of the peer mentoring programs as well as supplemental instruction through the Center for Academic Program Support, (CAPS).
Many students struggle to complete the general core curriculum, which in turn leaves them not fully prepared for the more demanding courses in their major. As students find themselves failing to make adequate progress, they quietly withdraw from school. Student Development and Engagement focuses on these students by providing programs that help them through the gateway courses and continue their education here at UNM.
The Peer Mentor Program places mentors within English 101, English 102, Math 120 and Math 121 courses to assist students in their studies. Mentors help their students maneuver the intricacies of this university by providing mentoring, social, cultural, and academic support in and out of the classroom. Mentors also serve as "pillars" for students who are uncomfortable within the university setting.
The Supplemental Instructor Program provides supplemental Instruction leaders in gateway courses. These leaders provide supplemental instruction to the students on an individual bases. The leaders are trained by CAPS and can earn certification.
