China Then and Now

Early Chinese Pottery

Neolithic double ram effigy
2012.91.8, painted double ram effigy, low-fired pottery; 3300–2000 B.C.
Eason Eige Collection; photo by B. Bernard

This small (about 4 1/2 inches or 12 cm long) effigy piece shows two side-by-side rams. We know that the double ram is from the Majiayao culture but don't know which phase to assign it to—hence the broad date range. This piece may be an early example of mingqi.
