China Then and Now

Two animal figures from the Neolithic period

Two dogs?
2012.91.16, two animal figures, low-fired ceramic; 7000–2000 B.C.?
Eason Eige Collection; photo by B. Bernard.

Are these dogs or some other animal? Horses, perhaps? Feel free to use your imagination, as some child may have thousands of years ago.

Or perhaps these are not toys at all, but early examples of mingqi (tomb offerings). They are from the Neolithic period, but so far we're not able to date them more precisely. They are 2 1/2 inches (6 cm) tall.
