"Mud man" is the name given to figures of this type by collectors. The name comes from the fact that the face and other skin areas are left unglazed. Most "mud men" date to the early or middle 1900s, but they continue to be made today. They were hand-made, so no two figures are alike. Many are from the Shiwan area in Guandong Province. In this country, small examples were sometimes used as ornaments in aquariums!
