China Then and Now

Shang Dynasty jar with a stamped surface

Jar with stamped surface
2012.91.205, jar; Shang dynasty, 1600–1046 B.C.

Like the jar on the previous page, this one had a complex surface design like those on the far more desirable Shang bronzes. No one was fooled, of course, but the owners could at least claim to know and appreciate the same aesthetic. If you look carefully, you'll see that the surface design was formed by pressing stamps into the still-damp clay—an artistic shortcut that helped make the piece affordable. Then as now, many families were on a tight budget.

The jar is 4 1/2 inches (11 1/2 cm) tall. For a side view of the jar, please click here.
