2012.91.51, jar with raised figures; painted ceramic
Eason Eige Collection; photo by B. Bernard
The body of this jar has two taotie with pendant rings, mimicking the rings and attachments on bronze vessels. Taotie appeared on Chinese vessels for many centuries, and their origins are lost in time. According to the poet Yang Shen (1488–1559), "The taotie likes to eat and drink." Hence one alternative name for taotie, "gluttonous ogre masks."
The shoulder of the jar has four figures,
which are shown individually below. The jar is 11 inches (28 cm) tall.
