By itself a rooster head is a visual reference to a Chinese pun relating roosters and good luck. (You can see a second example of such ewers here). On this ewer, combining a rooster with a dragon (the handle) also creates a reference to the male and female principles.

The principal glaze, a yellow-brown, has been enlivened with splashes of white glaze. The ewer is 11 1/2 inches (29 cm) tall. For a different view of the vessel, please click here.
