Vessels of the gu (觚) shape began as bronze wine cups in the
Shang dynasty, but by Song times they had become ornamental ceramic vases.
This gu is thus another example of how by the Song dynasty, Chinese ceramic
production was oriented toward meeting the demand of consumers including nobles,
rural gentry,
the civil servants usually recruited from the gentry, and merchants. In Song
China, those consumers would have numbered in the millions.
