Unlike other Cizhou ware vessels in this online exhibit, the one shown above was not decorated using a sgraffito (scratching) technique. Instead, the artist painted the jar using a loose, bold hand. If you scroll down, you can see further details of the main painted design, which occurs twice.

The term meiping (梅瓶) refers to the shape of the jar. Originally such jars were used to hold wine, but by Song times they were instead produced to hold branches of plum blossoms.
