Glazeware: A Chinese Gift to the World

This tea bowl was glazed twice, first with brown and then with Jun blue. Moreover, the glaze was made so thick that it beaded toward the base of the bowl exterior. Meanwhile, the base itself was left unglazed. These were all deliberate effects, designed to captivate elite buyers who spent a great deal of time developing their sense of taste.

The aesthetic impact of this piece is just as strong when one looks down into the interior, as the camera did in the image below. It's not difficult to imagine a member of the landed gentry prizing this particular tea bowl.
