China Then and Now

Han Dynasty (202 BCE–220 CE)

Han pig

Gift of Leslie Goodwill Cohen; photo by T. Ocken

The size and careful excecution of this sow indicate that it was entombed with someone important. Like other mingqi, this sow was designed to help sustain that person's enjoyment of the afterlife. In particular, the sow invoked meals to come (not only herself, but her offspring). She also invoked the general scenes of rural prosperity the dead would have enjoyed on his or her former estate.
