While Chinese blue and white ware was first made for the Chinese market, eventually demand became global. Europeans and other Westerners needed pieces that fit their own dietary and table habits, but often were fascinated by the painted designs on pieces imported from China. The result was a hybrid ware, European in form but Chinese in the painted details.
