Important Information for Users of IBM compatible machines
First of all, you must make sure that Java is enabled for your browser! If you don't know how to do this, click here.Once you've made sure that you've enabled Java for your browser, there appear to be two main factors that determine whether you can successfully access and run the simulations from the links in the "Run a Simulation" column: (i) the method you've used to connect to UNM's server, and (ii) the Web browser you're using to access my web page (I assume it's either Netscape Communicator/Navigator or Microsoft's Internet Explorer; no offense to those using something else).
If you're connecting to the UNM server via an ethernet or other 'direct' connection that bypasses the UNM dialup ports:
If you're connecting to the UNM server via the UNM dialup ports:
- Netscape Navigator/Communicator: the simulations seem to work consistently if you're using version 4.08 or later. Older versions of Netscape may or may not work, apparently because of problems with the way the programmers at Netscape encoded its implementation of Java (which is what I used to code the simulations). If you're having problems running the simulations, check the version of Netscape you're using (click here for instructions on how to do this). If you don't have Netscape 4.08 or newer, you'll probably need to download a newer version (currently 4.61) and install it on your machine before you can run the simulations.
- Internet Explorer: you should be able to run the simulations without any problems, although at least one beta tester has encountered difficulties. That may be due to the Internet Service Provider she's using (hotmail.com), as most have been able to run the simulations using the same version of Internet Explorer.
In this case, whether you are able to run the simulations or not is more 'iffy' than if you're connected more directly.
- Netscape Navigator/Communicator: versions of Communicator/Navigator prior to 4.5 may or may not run the simulations. Some have had success running using v. 4.08, but I personally did not. The newest versions (4.5 or later) seem to work without problems.
- Internet Explorer: those using the most recent versions (i.e., 4.0 and later) have not reported problems when trying to run the simulations.
