Answers to the President's questions on how Administration
To optimize administrative support for UNM’s mission and vision, it is crucial that the divisions within Administration work together as a cohesive group to provide the exemplary support and infrastructure that are vital to UNM’s core functions and their ability to achieve the ambitious goals and strategies necessary to fulfill UNM’s new vision. Individual divisions within Administration have been meeting to define their roles in helping with the strategic framework. In conjunction with this process, I have been meeting with the heads of these divisions to build a course of action whereby they will build synergistic partnerships which will magnify the impact we can make in supporting UNM’s core mission in a fiscally responsible way that connects, aligns, and activates UNM’s mission, vision, values, and strategies.
The strong Administrative management team that has been assembled over the past few years is poised to tackle the challenging and difficult goals of developing stronger business models that will increase revenues and implement improved efficiencies to reduce costs so more funds can be devoted to UNM’s core competencies. Each division is identifying ways they can further align their activities to help move UNM from Good to Great, some of which are highlighted in this executive summary.
Athletics adds value to UNM in many ways, one of which is building campus spirit and a sense of belonging for our students, faculty, staff, and alumni. They add value to our community by providing wholesome entertainment that enhances UNM’s connectivity with Albuquerque and the state of New Mexico. Athletics’ primary role is to further the education of student athletes and to exemplify UNM’s values for the campus. Student athletes are perhaps the most diverse population at the University. To help move UNM from Good to Great, Athletics is collaborating with other entities on campus in the design and completion of the new student success center; investing in improving the fan experience and enhancing campus vitality; and improving athletic facilities. Athletics plays an extensive and valuable role in marketing the University to people of all ages.
The Finance Division provides the fiscal leadership necessary to create an environment that stresses accountability and fiscal responsibility. They accurately and sensibly apply federal and state regulations and maintain a system of thorough internal controls that supports a strong bond credit rating and a consistently clean audit opinion. The Finance Division supports UNM’s mission and vision by understanding business operations, developing and maintaining optimal technical systems, and effectively communicating financial information at all levels. They can help move UNM from Good to Great by providing accounting information in an understandable format for departments to enable student-success-driven decision making, innovative research, and alignment of financial investments with UNM’s mission and vision.
The role of the Office of Government Relations is to build broad based support to advance UNM’s mission and vision. This support comes from the community and local, state, and federal governments. Government Relations can help move UNM from Good to Great through better coordination of the state and federal processes with a more strategic effort on both fronts that will save time and UNM resources and result in stronger relations and legislative support.
The Division of Human Resources contributes to UNM’s mission and vision by providing a seamless, consistent, customer-focused, and quality-driven system of services, products, tools, and programs to ensure a competent, vibrant, and diverse workforce. Human Resources can help move UNM from Good to Great by ensuring efficient and effective processes and technology are in place to help units accomplish their business objectives; establishing metrics for UNM departments to empower managers to make better decisions; and ensuring UNM has a competitive and sustainable total compensation package.
Information Technology Services (ITS) provide the technology infrastructure that supports faculty, staff, and students in achieving excellence in research, education, patient care, and public service. IT across campus is harmonized, enterprise services are consolidated, and collective IT decision-making processes are transparent. Information Technology Services provide quality commodity/utility computing services in a straightforward, sustainable, and effective way for each of the University’s core missions. Information Technology Services can help move UNM from Good to Great by facilitating, mediating, and brokering technology solutions within the IT-using community; providing more direct support to education, research, health care, and public service needs; and partnering with Enrollment Management to modernize and streamline the student experience.

They can help move UNM from Good to Great by partnering with campus entities for exciting and successful events and supporting all aspects of student success with exemplary services and outstanding products. They can also help by providing quality facilities that enhance student success by including access to appropriate technology, natural lighting, comfortable seating, and student gathering areas for recreation or studying.

They provide exceptional police services that preserve human rights and protect persons and property. The diversity of the Police Department enhances its ability to better understand and serve the multi-cultural diversity of our community. The Police Department emphasizes a strong proactive approach, with positive interactions that respect differences and foster communication. They will also create a framework that standardizes best security practices for all research facilities throughout the campus.
Safety and Risk Services play a vital role in making UNM a safe venue for the free exchange of ideas. Safety is the critical backbone to creating an environment where success can thrive. For students, faculty, and staff to excel they must feel safe and trust that they work in an environment free from fear. Safety and Risk Services work with students, faculty, staff, and the public to make risk management, safety, and loss prevention integral to every activity at UNM. They can help move UNM from Good to Great by identifying opportunities to streamline efforts, maximize resources, and deliver services in a more effective manner with a focus on creativity and innovation.
The UNM Policy Office plays a vital role in UNM’s vision and mission by developing policies that reflect a set of interrelated decisions that define goals, set out the means to achieve them, and greatly influence and in many cases drive behavior. The UNM Policy Office can help move UNM from Good to Great by working with UNM’s executive management to prioritize those policy issues facing higher education that are of greatest importance in helping UNM achieve its mission and vision, align with its values, and enable its strategies. The highly effective collaborative policy development process used by the UNM Policy Office ensures that individuals who may be impacted by policy are allowed an opportunity to contribute to policy development and/or evaluate proposed polices. This inclusive and transparent process builds consensus and provides the insight necessary to avoid creating unintentional barriers or roadblocks that may impede faculty, staff, and students in achieving excellence in research, education, patient care, and public service in a minority/majority university setting.
