The University College Advisement Center (UCAC) plays a pivotal role in shaping the early academic success of UNM students. The primary mission of the Advisement Center is the professional and personalized academic advisement of the over 7000 students in University College. The interaction between students and the Advisement Center begins with their initial academic placement and advisement during Lobo Orientation. This guidance continues for the next 1- 3 years. The Center maintains an intensive advising program for students on academic probation and has created a unique "Second Chance" Program. In order to promote a healthy sense of community and pro-actively participate in the academic careers of the diverse UC student population, the Advising Center also functions within a spectrum of campus wide initiatives and programs that have a direct impact on student success and retention. The Advising Center plays a major role in smoothing the transition to UNM. Staff advisors participate heavily in the design and execution of the advising segments of Lobo Orientation. The Student Success Center is a new and innovative office maintained by the Advisement Center. It offers assistance from peer mentors with any problems encountered at UNM including academics and extracurricular activities. The Advisement Center strives, in particular, to enhance retention of students in "at-risk" categories. Staff advisors work closely with the outstanding array of Student Service Centers on campus and refer students to programs best suited to their individual needs. Advising Center has assumed a leadership role in the coordination of the placement and monitoring of students enrolled in Introductory Studies (IS) courses. An "Early Warning Tracking" program for IS courses implemented to assess student progress during the semester and intervene with montoring or tutoring support where appropriate. The mission of UCAC is to ensure that new students, both Freshmen and Transfer, are successful in reaching their educational goals.
