Time in Rugby-Run With the Wolf Pack

Shar Amner

My time spent at UNM were some of the best times of my life, and the fantastic opportunities I experienced with Lobo Rugby will always hold strong in my thoughts. I can not thank the UNM Lobo RFC & Coach Robinson enough for helping me grow to be the person I am today. I clearly remember arriving at UNM from New Zealand and immediately felt a sense of welcoming from the club, I could see a close knit team with the goal to achieve. The team unity was definitely in place and the commitment levels were high to learn and develop the skills required in rugby. With the motivation and leadership from Coach Shannon Robinson along with the coaching & rugby experience from Coach Ian Jones, I could see that the direction this club was heading for were to bigger honours & development. The many memories I hold from my time at UNM are highlighted with my first game for the club against University of Northern Colorado @ The University Stadium and scoring my first try in that game . And getting up before the birds to attend weight training sessions in the Tow Diehm Building, enduring the fitness trainings sessions through to refining our rugby skills on the training field. The times of relaxing with team members in the Student Union Building (SUB) in between classes, and the many trips away to play games, finally. And no one can ever forget the times we had enjoying the after match functions at 'The Rugby House' or at Christian & Gabe's place, with as many of our supporters who were keen to attendƒ.and a lot of supporters were keen to attend when refreshments were on offer, which was also a kind gesture from the team to thank our supporters After leaving UNM much earlier than expected due to injury I returned to New Zealand to recuperate and continue to achieve in rugby and up skill my rugby knowledge base. doing the best for my team, we went through the season unbeaten with 15 wins . From there I moved on to complete a course in Exercise Science & Coaching to further add to my coaching skill base. Then on to 2001/2002 where I utilised my course knowledge by being a Sports Strapper/ Fitness Assistance with a senior men's team and at certain times would pull on my boots to have a run for the 2 nd XV team when needed. In 2003 while working in a fitness gym I had the honour of assisting the Springbok rugby team with a weight training session before their test against the All Blacks and was also involved in the planning stages of establishing a rugby academy for high school students. Throughout the 2004 season I gained a position with a company contracted to NZRFU as a rugby coder. Where I statistically coded All Black & Super 12 (now known as Super 14) games, to be used as a tool by the NZ coaching & selection panels and players. This role taught me so much more about all facets of the game and gave me the opportunity to assist NZ rugby players in compiling the statistical breakdown and analysis of professional rugby games. In 1999 I Studied Sports Management & coached a high school team with mixed results. In 2000 I was fit again to play club rugby and enjoyed being back on the field playing and doing the best for my team, we went through the season unbeaten with 15 wins . In this current rugby season of 2006, which has just ended, I coached a high school rugby team with a lot of success. My main goal was to develop the players for their future playing careers, and I also learnt more different aspect's of coaching and came away with new developments and more ideas for the future. Now to the present time where the search is on for an overseas club to play for and where I can assist in development & coaching, after being involved in a lot of different rugby roles I have now become a more rounded player/coach both physically & mentally with a broader knowledge base. And I give due credit to UNM Lobo Rugby for giving me the reasons to show commitment, set goals, strive to achieve and to enjoy the game of rugby with all that it has to offer.

Yours in Rugby
