UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO

Summary of Strategic Planning Process

2000-2001

Calendar updated June 15, 2001

The UNM Strategic Planning process has proceeded as originally conceived and, for the most part, on schedule. The timing of the public comment process in December and January was delayed slightly by some delays in completion and publication of our working papers, and subsequent activities have been moved up accordingly. The result is that the final version of the plan will be prepared over the summer and will receive broad campus comment in the early fall. The schedule below has been revised to reflect these adjustments.

2000

May Appoint and Charge Task Force

May/June Task Force develops the process

June/July Define the domain of the plan

Conduct an environmental scan

Review vision, mission, and values statements

Aug With reference to vision, mission, and value statements, the environmental scan, and previous planning documents, the Task Force reviews materials that define the domain of the plan, identifies up to 15 or 20 areas for which committees will write short working papers, and an additional committee to identify areas for which UNM can aspire to develop/sustain major university initiatives with genuine national and world prominence [19 committees were actually formed and submitted reports]

Oct/Nov Committees develop 5-page working papers on subject areas of the plan’s domain

Dec/Jan Review of working papers by

2001

Jan/Feb Based on review of working papers, environmental scan, and all other input received, Task Force will define "strategic directions" for UNM (i.e., overarching goals) and will appoint a committee to write a substantial working paper on each [seven strategic directions were defined]

Feb/Mar Working papers on strategic directions are written

April Broad review and comment on papers on the strategic directions (see notes for December/January review)

April Task Force writes first draft of plan based on strategic direction working papers

Summer/ Broad public review of draft plan (see notes for November review)

Early Fall

All working papers, drafts of the plan, and process materials are published on a UNM Planning Website (www.unm.edu/~unmstrat), which provides an opportunity for on-line comment. All people interested in the University of New Mexico are invited to follow the process and to take the opportunity to comment on the emerging plan.
