SERVICE TO THE GREATER COMMUNITY GROUPING
DECEMBER 12, 2000
MTTC AUDITORIUM
5:30 P.M. TO 7:30 P.M.

It was mentioned that there have been many suggestions regarding community outreach in past planning exercises and yet they have not been implemented. There is an expectation of follow-up and implementation regarding suggestions made through the strategic planning process overall. Attendees felt that an action plan should be implementable and still we must realize that we can not be all things to all people. A discussion took place about the fact that some individuals chose not to be involved in strategic planning because of negative experiences previously.

A suggestion was made for UNM to work more actively, not only with the legislature, but also with the governor and with his cabinet members.

The issue of economic development was prominent and it was stated that UNM must become a greater force in this arena. Faculty incentives were mentioned as important in recognizing their efforts towards economic development.

Staff and faculty compensation was a major topic of discussion with attendees agreeing that this is a core issue facing the University of New Mexico.

Duplication was mentioned as a problem at the University of New Mexico. The strategic plan is viewed as a mechanism for dealing with this important issue.

Continuing education was mentioned as a positive direction for UNM with life-long learning viewed as important. Also, it was stated that branch campuses do not have the necessary resources to facilitate the transition to four-year institutions.

There was an observation that we are doing so much and getting so little recognition for our efforts. New innovations, technologies, and research are areas of pride for UNM. Nonetheless, it is a perception that we are under-administered and that advancing the institution through strong leadership is key.
