It was mentioned that the University of New Mexico has no listed number with ATT or Qwest for general information. Furthermore, the UNM operator system at 277-0111 needs to be improved for individuals requesting general information.

Staff and faculty compensation was raised as a major issue. The rigidity of restrictions regarding increases for compensation even when departments have the resources is a concern. It was suggested that UNM Human Resources limit restrictions regarding raises and allow for greater departmental decision-making.

Merit raises were mentioned and it is a concern that managers must either give an across the board increase or must give one employee less in order to give another more.

There seems to be no major coordinating organization or individual for economic development at the University of New Mexico. Conversely, some individuals are concerned with UNM becoming more actively involved in this area.

Questions were posed about how to increase interest amongst high school students in higher education. The dilemma of enrollment of four-year institutions versus two-year institutions was mentioned. Also, the drop in graduate school enrollment is a concern.

It was stated that our technical training is far behind the industry and that we are in need of updated equipment, especially for many faculty members.

A suggestion was presented for UNM to develop a community outreach office. We must also assist in developing businesses. It was stated that people in the business and government community are saying that they do not hear from us regularly.

It was mentioned that we should not compromise a strong liberal arts education with too great an emphasis on the technical fields. It is a concern when graduates of certain fields can not write.

Reallocation is a major concern for some faculty. Securing additional resources was mentioned as a necessity in the strategic planning process.
