EXAMPLE OF THE PLAN FORMAT

A

Strategic Direction: Provide high quality undergraduate education in a comprehensive inventory of academic programs while maximizing access to the University and achieving high rates of retention and graduation.

Objective 1: Develop the University Honors Program to include 1200 students whose academic qualifications and level of achievement equal that of the most prestigious private liberal arts colleges.

Tactics:

  • Aggressively recruit the most talented honors students to UNM, reaching a freshman class of 400 with entry credentials matching those of the best liberal arts colleges.
  • Increase the number of disciplinary honors programs, eventually spanning the entire inventory of undergraduate majors.
  • Increase the number of Research Experiences for Undergraduates, with special efforts to engage honors students.

  • Objective 2: Increase freshman retention to reach 80%.

    Tactics:

    • Enroll all freshmen in Freshman Seminars.
    • Increase the ratio of academic advisors to students to 200:1 by 2003.
    • Develop an early intervention program to (a) identify students who are experiencing academic difficulty and (b) actively intervene as quickly as possible.
    • Increase to 16 the number of college prep courses required for admission to UNM.
    •

Strategic Direction: Achieve and maintain a high level of effectiveness in the University's academic and non-academic operations.

Objective 1: Reduce by 75% the number of students "shut out" of course sections in which they wish to enroll.

    Tactics:

    • Reduce by 50% the number of courses which do not meet minimum enrollment standards and shift those instructional resources to high-demand courses.
    • Reduce the clustering of course offerings which occurs in the 9:00 - 12:00 AM time period.
    • Offer 50 high-demand courses through the Internet.

Objective 2: Reduce by 25% the time required to fill staff positions.

    Tactics:

      • Eliminate one or more steps in the approval process for "new positions."
      • Develop an on-line employment application process.
      • Continue automation of the employment process to the extent permitted by available resources. Look for "high value-added" applications

Strategic Direction: Increase the University's resource base.

Objective 1: Increase the number of endowed faculty positions.

    Tactics:

  • Make endowed positions a top fund-raising goal.
  • Lobby the State for funding to match private contributions for endowed faculty positions.
  • Aggressively pursue corporate and "class of 19XX" contributions for endowed positions.
  • Objective 2: Increase funding for technology.

    Tactics:

  • Implement a university-wide student technology fee.
  • Pursue partnerships with technology companies to fund high-tech research and teaching facilities.
