Define the domain of the plan
- Processes with deans and others to develop preliminary outlines of
the content areas of the plan — a statement of all that the University
is to do and grouping these obligations in major categories
- Continue definition of the domain with structured brainstorming sessions
with diverse constituents
- Conduct an environmental scan
- Committee to analyze the social, economic, political, cultural, technological,
and educational environment in which the University will exist over
the next five to ten years
- Review vision, mission, and values statements

With reference to vision, mission, and value statements, the environmental
scan, and previous planning documents, the Task Force reviews materials
that define the domain of the plan, identifies up to 20 or 25 areas for
which committees will write short working papers |

Committees develop 5-page working papers on subject areas of the plan’s
domain |

Based on review of working papers, environmental scan, and all other input
received, Task Force defines approximately six "strategic directions" for
UNM (i.e., overarching goals) and appoints a committee to write a substantial

Task Force writes first draft of plan based on strategic direction working

All working papers, drafts of the plan, and process materials will be published
on a UNM Planning Website, which will also provide an opportunity for on-line
comment. All people interested in the University of New Mexico are invited to
follow the process and to take the opportunity to comment on the emerging plan.
