SUBJECT Strategic Planning at UNM

I am writing to invite you to participate in UNM’s strategic planning process and to inform you of our progress since the process began this spring. There has been a widespread belief both within and outside the University that we need to look carefully and comprehensively at the University’s mission and at its programs, assuring that its resource allocation was aligned well with its mission and the priorities of its many and varied constituencies.

In the late spring, President Gordon and I appointed a Planning Task Force and charged it to develop a process for completing a new strategic plan no later than the end of our spring semester, 2001 and to coordinate the process through to its completion. The process that is described in the attached materials is the result of that Task Force’s work. As you will see readily, our success will depend heavily on the level of participation of the campus community and the University’s many community stakeholders.

I urge you to consider joining us in this important exercise. Please examine the summary of the process, identify those activities that you would be most interested in joining, and follow up in appropriate sections of the accompanying materials. Participation can take the form of joining focus groups, various kinds of brainstorming processes, review of and comment on working papers and drafts of the plan, and/or providing any other kind of input that you deem appropriate.

Thank you for your help. Our main goal is the continued success of UNM in meeting the needs of our many constituencies. We appreciate your assistance.
