This assignment involved obtaining and combining soil data from the STATSGO soil data base and land use data from RGIS for the Pecos River headwaters area. The first step was to obtain soil data for all of New Mexico. This data was then clipped to the Pecos River headwaters area. The soils data from this area was used for a more detailed analysis of map unit NM963. Various properties such as average depth and available water capacity were calculated for individual components as well as total map unit averages (See attached excel spread sheet). Next the land use categories for Fort Sumner and Santa Fe were imported and combined using the append function. This data was then ‘clipped’ to the Pecos Headwater Area using the intersect function. Two maps were produced using ArcMap, one of Soils and one of Land Use for the Pecos Headwater Area.
