Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ

Q: I want to get my GED. Where do I start?

A: If you live in Valencia County, the place to start is in the Adult Education Center. Come in and we will set you up to take an assessment test. This test will tell us where your skill levels are and if you need to study before taking your GED test.

Q: I was told I have to attend a workshop before I can take my GED test. What is the workshop for?

A: The workshop will cover some strategies for test taking, how to fill out the paperwork, practice with the type of calculator that is provided for the test and practice with the special answer sheets.

Q: How old do you have to be to take the GED test?

A: You have to be at least 16 to test. If you are under 18, make sure you get a withdrawal pass form from your high school and also bring a parent with you to sign the permission forms.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: The assessment tests, classes, workshops, and tutoring session are free. The only thing that costs any money is the Official GED Test. The fee for the Official GED Test is $40.00.

Q: I’ve taken the assessment test, my GED classes, and have gone to the Test-Taking Strategies workshop. What is next?

A: Now you are ready to take the Official GED Practice Test. This test is a little over half the length of the actual GED test and is a very accurate indicator for how you will score on the actual test. A tutor reviews the results and makes recommendations for additional study time or to register for the GED test.

Q: How do I register for the actual GED test?

A: You will pick up your file from the Adult Education Center, pay the $40 fee at the cashier’s office and then go to Student Services with two forms of identification to finish registering.

Q: How long does it take to complete all these tests?

A: The assessment test takes about 1-½ to 2 hours. The Official GED Practice Test takes from 3 to 4 ½ hours to complete all five sections. The sections can be split up and do not need to be taken all in the same day. The Official GED Test takes about 7 to 8 hours and is split up over three consecutive mornings.
