Power-Up Workshops

New Students coming into the program are required to take a number of workshops designed to enhance their learning experience and improve their chances of success in the program. Students must choose three workshops from the following subjects:

Career Planning and CHOICES
This workshop consists of two parts. In the first part, students will investigate various career pathways using CHOICES (computer program). This program helps students determine what career(s) may be best for them. This also allows students to map career pathways, plan for their career of choice, study wages, educational requirements, and job demands. In the second part of the Career Planning Workshop, students will review their assessments and discuss career planning. Students will learn and discuss employability skills and what makes for a successful employee.

Stress Management and Math Anxiety
Students will learn and discuss the best methods for dealing with stress in their everyday lives. Students will indentify stress triggers and positive coping methods. Students will also specifically explore math anxiety and triggers as well as methods for coping with anxiety.

PowerPath
This workshop consists of two parts. Students who have experienced difficulties learning can benefit from visual, visual stress syndrome (VSS), auditory, and attention difficulties screenings. Students will complete these screenings during the first part of PowerPath. In part two of PowerPath students will review a report based on the results of the part one screenings. Students will then develop a personal learning plan individualized to help support them and their specific needs in life, school, and work

Computer Applications
Students with basic computer skills will explore various uses of computers to support them in school, work, and life. Students will explore e-mail, online applications, file management, basic word processing, and web browsing.

Test Taking Anxiety and Test Skills
Students will learn ways to cope with the common anxiety associated with test taking. Students will discover strategies and skills for successful test taking. Strategies will focus on tests associated with the GED program as well as general academic tests.

Learning Styles and Study Skills
Students discover their preferred approach to learning through learning styles assessments. Students will then learn what methods of study work best for their particular style of learning. Students will also review various study skills to achieve student success.
