Instructional Council Meeting Minutes

Present: Kevin Begley, Cindy Chavez, Miriam Chavez, David Coker, Jon Conescu, Julie Depree, Lucille Farrington, Reinaldo Garcia, Patricia Gillikin, Tina Kitzrow, Rita Logan, Mary Robinson, Esther Shir, Joan Summerhays and Stephanie West

Absent: Toni Black, Martin Castillo, Olga Gandara, Dubra Karnes-Padilla, Michelle LeBeau and Ray Rondeau

Visiting: (no visitors)

The meeting began at 1:30 p.m. with Reinaldo Garcia asking for a motion to approve the minutes of September 1, 2004.  Tina Kitzrow requested that a correction to the minutes be made as her name was misspelled.  Esther Shir asked that the word scanners be taken out as it implies that the library has scanners and it does not. 

Kevin Begley made the motion to approve the meeting minutes of September 1, 2004 with corrections to be made. Miriam Chavez seconded the motion, and the minutes were adopted.

Discussion Items

·        Reinaldo Garcia began by giving a breakdown of requests for instructional equipment funds as follows Community Ed. would like CPR manikin, Language/literature request for Brain, Science department request integrated Nuclear Lab system for windows, and advance human physiology teaching kit, electrostatic VandeGraf  (see Equip Requests FY 04-05 handout).  Reinaldo Garcia then gave explanation of instructional equipment requests for 2004-2005 handout.  If everything is approved/purchased then funds will be depleted.

·        Miriam Chavez spoke on the need for the requests of the science department.  Kevin Begley said that he thought that there was one VandeGraf around that might be usable, will look into it.

·        Motion was made by Cindy Chavez, to approve science equipment request, with exception of VandeGraf until it was looked into further on wether or not the campus already had a usable VandeGraf.  Second was made by Tina Kitrow.  Motion approved.

·        Rita Logan then spoke on her departments need for a new manikin.  Motion was made to accept request for manikin by Jon Connesu, Kevin Begley second the motion.  Motion approved.

·        Vacancies for Office Administrator and Administrative Asst. I, have been filled by Della Willis as Office Administrator and Patricia Esquivel will be the new Administrative Asst. I, she will be working evenings and Saturday’s.

·        Reinaldo Garcia gave update on Title V Grant.  It was awarded and money has been received, will be working    with the Los Alamos Branch. He spoke on small changes for the Title V Grant.  Principle position has changed it will now be an Administrative Coordinator, and will be a grade 10 administrator.  Other positions will be a senior academic advisor to serve Valencia campus and Los Alamos, Instructional Technologist, Computer Hardware Technician, and an administrative assistant.

·        An Instructional Technology Center will be created and housed in room 138 (former Human Resource area).  Equipment used to train faculty will also be purchased (e.g., 10 workstations, color laser printer, digital camera, software).

·        Three one credit courses aimed at training adjunct faculty will be developed (small stipend will be allowed and will be tuition free.)   These courses include basic computer skills, web page development and more advanced web design.  Discussion followed on which adjunct would be allowed to take these classes and what criteria would be used to decide.

Department Reports

·        Lucille Farrington will head tutoring program in the Learning Center.  Equal Access is being given to Student Services.   Developmental studies labs are now incorporated with the lecture portion of the course.  Discussion followed on the developmental studies lab and how they will affect students and how instructors will be using these labs as well as what courses will benefit from these labs.  Scheduling of computer lab rooms will need to be addressed as well.

·        Cindy Chavez reminded everyone newsletter articles are due Friday, October, 8, 2004.

·        Reinaldo Garcia spoke on a move in New Mexico to make most freshmen/sophomore courses/ ID numbers universal thought out the state of New Mexico.  The benefit of this move is that students can have a seamless transition from one institution to another.  Legislators feel money is being wasted through duplication and that institutions are not in tune with their community.

·        Reinaldo Garcia also informed Instructional Council that a task force has been setup to assess core curriculum classes, and their coherence to what the student is learning and what he can do after the student takes the class.  Discussion followed on what objectives are to be met, and how this would be implemented and how objectives to core curriculum would be met.

The meeting adjourned at 3.01 pm.
