What
is assessment & why should we do it?
"Assessment is
the process of gathering and discussing information from multiple and diverse
sources in order to develop a deep understanding of what students know,
understand, and can do with their knowledge as a result of their educational
experiences; the process culminates when assessment results are used to improve
subsequent learning." (Huba, M. E. and Freed, J. E., 2000. Learner-Centered Assessment on
College Campuses -- Shifting the Focus from Teaching to Learning.
In other words, by systematically acquiring
information to evaluate student learning we can:
Ä
develop
productive methods to measure student achievement
Ä
better
help our students achieve our stated learning objectives
Ä
evaluate
the effectiveness of our courses and programs
Ä
make
informed decisions on pedagogical, course and curricular reforms.
This means we’ll be
able to determine how well we are accomplishing our goals and find ways to be
more effective educators. Although
assessment needs to be documented for certification, MORE IMPORTANTLY
it can save us time and energy by allowing us to see what works best for our
students.

Assessment Plans
All
assessment plans are “works in progress” as we constantly endeavor to serve our
ever changing student bodies, as new information, technologies and ideas are
created and as our society evolves.
These plans are NOT mandates.
Each of you has individual teaching strengths and styles. These plans are meant to help you develop
effective plans for YOUR students, courses, and programs. Please send in your ideas to amend and add to
the plans on this page and submit plans
for any of your courses and programs.
Our ultimate goals is to have plans available that you can adapt for all
of the branch campus programs and as many of our course as possible.
