School of Engineering - Centennial Engineering Center Construction Detours

The alley/access between the CEC site and Farris Engineering, Nuclear
Engineering and Mechanical Engineering is part of the Accessible Route
to these three buildings as well as Tapy Hall. The best approach is from
the east and down the temporary ramp to avoid the vehicles also using
this alley/access. It was not thought to exclude HC access from the west
up the alley/access, but when work is going on here it would be best if
only the path from the east was used. Prior to the construction this
alley/access was used by both vehicles and HC Access.

School of Architecture Construction Detours

There will be a temporary metal handicapped ramp on the north side of the bookstore leading to the Cornell mall area. Blind pedestrians should possibly ask for assistance and others should offer assistance to help them to be aware of the ramp because it is now on the right against the bookstore instead of the left side before construction started. This will allow the impaired to understand their directions correctly. Thank you.

Accessible Parking at UNM - as quoted from: The UNM Parking Regulations www.unm.edu/parking

  • "A state-issued handicapped parking placard [any state] or a temporary handicapped parking permit issued by Parking and Transportation Services is required to utilize UNM's handicapped parking spaces."
  • "When a designated handicapped parking space is unavailable, persons displaying these permits may park in any zone or metered parking space without payment." [ For FREE ]
  • "If a handicapped parking permit is displayed, the registered owner of the permit must be the driver of, or a passenger in, the vehicle."
  • "Parking and Transportation Services staff may request verification of permit ownership. Fraudulent use of handicapped parking will result in the highest possible penalty."
  • Please note:UNM Parking and Transportation Services could change the rules at any time. (1-29-03)

Explanation of Rules- You need a handicapped parking permit (from either the state government or UNM) to park at UNM, however that permit will allow you to park for FREE at meters, or almost anywhere else.

(Almost means: The permits are not valid at Restricted Areas (painted curbs) such as: fire zones (red curbs), safety zones (yellow curbs), or official government vehicle, service vehicle (green curbs), loading areas , wheelchair cuts, sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, traffic lanes or reserved parking spaces).

Thus, any valid, current, disabled parking placard (state-issued or UNM-issued) will work at any UNM Parking Meter, or any UNM letter permit parking zone (A,B,C,D,E,F,G,K, M, L, Q, R, South Lot or Structure, or Turner Lot) anywhere on Main, North or South Campus.

Additionally, the G lot, Q Lot, South Lot, and T (Turner) Lot shuttles all feature wheelchair lifts.

And if a handicapped parking permit is displayed, the UNM parking meters are FREE, and so are the visitor parking lots by the UNM Bookstore (near Central Avenue at Stanford Dr NE.)

Please note: Zone X parking on Sigma Chi Rd NE & Mesa Vista Rd NE and the parking meters on the south side of Central Avenue SE are owned and operated by the City of Albuquerque, which has its own rules about disabled parking.
