BICYCLING AND WALKING AT UNM
Last Updated: March 21, 2006 at 9:35 am

The University of New Mexico Main Campus sits on 600 acres along Central Ave with a single road that lines its perimeter. Vehicle access inside the campus is limited, which makes the University conducive to bicycling and walking for means of transportation.

Bike to Work Day
May 19, 2006

This years Bike to Work Day will be held on May 19, 2006 across Albuquerque. Bike to Work Day in Albuquerque coincides with the national Bike to work Day on the 19th.  Please check back for more information as it becomes available!

Bicycling
Approximately nine percent of UNM students, staff and faculty ride their bicycles to campus. If you are riding your bike on campus, please make sure you do the following:

  • Register your bicycle with the University of New Mexico Police Department (UNMPD). Registration is free of charge and can help in the recovery of your bicycle if it is stolen. Contact UNMPD at (505) 277-2241.
  • Buy a bike lock. UNM has bike racks located throughout campus. If you are leaving your bicycle alone for any amount of time, protect it with a lock .
  • Know the locations of bike racks. Finding a place to properly store your bicycle while you are on campus is easy and convenient. The map below denotes most bicycle rack locations on campus. Please remember that buildings with high student volume (for example, Dane Smith Hall and Student Union Building) have many bike racks, but they tend to fill up fast!
  • Know the UNM rules. With thousands of people concentrated on campus, it is important you understand and abide by UNM bicycle policies and procedures. Per the University Business Policy # 2260, "Individuals using bicycles, skates, skateboards, and other nonmotorized vehicles on campus must at all times yield to pedestrians, use due caution, and exercise concern for the safety of self and others. Users of nonmotorized vehicles on University property must comply with all aspects of this policy. Persons believed to be in violation of this policy must produce identification upon request." Click here for a detailed explanation of this policy.
  • Know the State rules: Per New Mexico Parking and Traffic Regulations, "Bicycle riders on public streets have the same rights and responsibilities as automobile drivers and are subject to the same rules and regulations as any other vehicle on the road." Examples include: 1) Cyclists should ride as near to the right side of the road as possible; 2) Cyclists should ride single file, not next to one another; 3) Cyclists should not ride on sidewalks if it is reasonably safe to ride on the street; 4) Cyclists should yield the right-of-way to all pedestrians; 5) Cyclists should abide by all traffic signs and use hand signals when turning.
  • Wear your helmet. For safety purposes, it is important that all bicyclists wear protective gear. Learn how to fit your helmet, prices and answers to other frequently asked questions at http://www.bhsi.org
  • Duty of motorists to cyclists: In approaching or passing a person on a bicycle, every person operating a motor vehicle must proceed with caution and pass at a reasonable speed and safe distance. In no event should the distance between vehicle and bicycle be less than five feet.

UNM offers ample bicycle racks for the nine percent of students, staff and faculty that use bicycles as their primary mode of transportation to and around campus. Pictured above are the different types of bike racks available throughout University grounds

The red dots above represent the various bike racks around Central Campus.

The map above illustrates the bike racks located on UNM North Campus.
