Lomas Blvd Chiller Plant--a UNM Physical Plant Department Project --updated 6/12/03 NEW - Lomas Chilled Water Plant - Grand Opening Weds., June 25, 2003 at 3:45 pm __ The new Chiller Plant is located between Las Lomas Road, Lomas Blvd NE,Yale Blvd and Stanford Drive. Its just north of the Anderson School of Management.
The new Lomas Chilled Water Plant is Finished! This arial photo shows the work in the beginning stages in 2002..(Photo by UNM Hospital, Lifeguard Heilcopter crew) Lomas Chilled Water Plant - began operation in May 2003 The new plant on Las Lomas Rd NE will expand the generating capacity of the UNM chilled water delivery network. The chilled water is used to provide cool air in each building. The 12,000-ton plant will provide the additional cooling capacity required to satisfy growing campus needs, both now and in the future. The site is adjacent to the existing electrical supply substation, which has just been upgraded to meet UNM's growing needs. The new Chilled Water plant came on line in May 2003. Operational fine tuning (software adjustements) will take a few more months until we see the full utility savings generated by the new plant. A few computer images of the plant are pictured below, as well as a photo tour of the tunnel under Lomas Blvd.Click here for a photo tour of the Lomas Crossing (tunnel tour). An Aerial View of the plan. Note: the four cooling towers are along Lomas Blvd NE. Before the project:
A vacant house at the plant site was removed to make way for the new Chilled Water Plant. During the project, one could see the piles of dirt along Las Lomas and Lomas by the Hospital Entrance where the entrances to the utility tunnel under Lomas Blvd are.
