CAPITAL PROJECT APPROVAL FOR CARRIE TINGLEY HOSPITAL ORTHOTICS & PROSTHETICS LAB- UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO HOSPITALS RECOMMENDED ACTION As required by Section 7.12 of the Board of Regents Policy Manual and the NM Commission of Higher Education, capital project approval is requested for the remodel of the Orthotics & Prosthetics Lab located at the Carrie Tingley Hospital of the University of New Mexico Hospitals. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Orthotics & Prosthetics Lab (Lab) is located on the first floor east side of Carrie Tingley Hospital. The program includes adjacent fitting exam rooms, and overall comprises an area of approximately 4000 square feet. The remodel will address space deficiencies for both equipment and chemicals used in the manufacture of prosthetic and orthotic devices. To accommodate this work, the roofing system, and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems will be upgraded as well. Hazardous materials will be abated. RATIONALE The Lab is a significant component of the Carrie Tingley Hospital program, and continues to serve its patient population as they mature into adulthood. It is accredited by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics, which is concerned about worker safety among other issues. As the program has grown, safety standards have been compromised by crowded conditions, poor ventilation, and inadequate dust control. Existing conditions on the unit are unacceptable for continued staff use and are inadequate for the growing volume of services. Both employee safety and satisfaction, and patient satisfaction, will increase with proper workspace that provides for quicker turn-around of medical devices. FUNDING The project budget is $800,000, funded by UNM Hospitals FY04 capital funds.
