BUILDOUT OF NATIONAL PARK SERVICE SPACE ON FLOORS 2&3 HIBBEN CENTER (Phase II) -updated September 8, 2006 Project to start in Late October 2006! We will be losing about 45 spaces of B parking due to construction of the Centennial Engineering Center and the new National Park Service Build-out of the Hibben Center. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Hibben Center, located south of the Anthropology Building in the west precinct of main campus, was completed in June 2002. It contains 37,565 sq ft on four levels, of which, approximately 1/3 (10,250 sq ft) was shelled out for future completion. This project constructs the improvements in that shell space for artifact collections, research labs and support space to accommodate the US National Park Service (NPS) and Chaco Anthropological Collections. RATIONALE UNM has maintained a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service since 1949 to jointly archive and study the artifacts and printed materials from the Chaco Culture National Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in west-central NM. This project extends and updates that agreement advancing the institution's research capability and ensuring access to an anthropological collection of regional and international importance. NPS staff and collections currently occupy leased space in the Anthropology Building and Zimmerman Library. This project will recapture that space for University purposes. The Park Service agreement included participation in the amount of $1,574,000 towards construction of the original Phase I, Hibben Center. FUNDING The project budget for Phase II is $2,198,100 from the U.S National Park Service FY 2004 capital funds.
