Lomas Underground
Crossing --Steam and Chilled Water Piping--Updated
1-31-2002 GLHN - Physical Plant Department Staff, took us on a mini-tour Thursday morning, January 31, 2002. We looked deeper into what the piles of dirt along Lomas Blvd and Las Lomas Road near the UNM Hospital are all about. The project is one piece in the Utility Upgrade Project. This piece is part of the Main Campus Distribution System, an upgrade of the steam/chilled water line network used to heat and cool the campus.
The big shovel dug a hole for the two 24 inch pipes that needed to go underneath Lomas Blvd. The pipes, like the one at the left in the picture, were put into sleeves after an opening was drilled underneath the street.
They coated the pipes with an insulating foam, and then filled up the spaces with sand-like silica.
The small light-green machines are tampers that compact the earth around the piping.
The silica was delivered to the site in the truck and then pumped out into the openings.
The silica keeps dust to a minimum during the project.
This is the view of the underground crossing on the north side of Lomas Blvd. For more detailed
info on the project, visit The Daily Lobo article or the Campus News article available at your click. Related Links: UNM
