RESEARCH LABORATORY BUILDING- SEVILLETA FIELD STATION PROJECT DESCRIPTION Since 1989, the UNM Department of Biology has operated a Long Term Ecological Research program at a field station on the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge 18 miles north of Socorro, NM. The existing station is supported by 19,000sq ft of facilities including a small general-purpose laboratory, library, seminar/meeting rooms, a computing center, workshop and 9 permanent residences for 48 student-scientists and a caretaker. This phase of development will construct 20,000 sq ft of wet and dry laboratory, research offices, classrooms and accompanying utility and support space. RATIONALE The Sevilleta Research Center supports some 70 scientists and students working on projects in botany, biology, geology, anthropology and conservation ecology. The center is operated in collaboration with the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service. This project will significantly increase the amount of active research and educational space, upgrade and modernize the quality of facilities and enhance the field station's infrastructure. It also better positions the Center to compete for funding in emerging areas of environmental science and federal research initiatives. The field station has been in existence for thirteen years and is one of the top three ecological research facilities in the United States. FUNDING The estimated project
budget is $6,060,000 funded completely by grants from the United States
Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service. Heather Wilson
announced that $3 million in federal funds (Interior Appropriations bill)
will be allocated for the center. Project Contractor Contacts View a story from Daily Lobo here View a story from Campus News here Return to UNM Construction here Sabra Jane Basler/Chad Lee MSC04 2545 2401 Redondo South
