Yep, I did it. I bought a new MacBook Air. I got the maxed out model: 13” display, 2.13 GHz processor, 256 GB SSD, and 4 GB memory. It’s a sweet little thing, and little is definitely the operating word. It’s so thin it gets lost in my current carrying cases.
What I like BEST about it:
• It’s light, light light
• It’s fast. I don’t know how Apple did it, but this thing feels incredibly fast. I guess it’s the SSD drive. Applications typically launch in 1-2 bounces, some in half a bounce. Even Adobe apps are fast (Photoshop CS5, Lightroom).
• I’ve tried the Remote Disk (CD/DVD), and it works like a charm, and faster than I expected. I also bought a SuperDrive, of course.
• Having USB ports on each side comes in handy more than you’d think.
• Battery life is unbelievable.
What I like LEAST about it:
• It’ll take me a while to get used to the smaller font sizes on the 13” display
• I’ll probably miss Firewire at some point. I haven’t yet. All my external backup drives have USB. I also bought a 640 GB portable (shirt pocket size) drive. Incredible value from Other World Computing for slightly more than $100
• I connect to a 24” Cinema Display at work. The power adaptor plugs into one side of the Air, the display port is on the other side — just weird, Apple. But the cables do stretch far enough.
I did the migration from my old MacBook Pro via an Ethernet cable (and the Apple USB-Ethernet adaptor). Worked just fine, but slow (almost 3 hours for a bit more than 100 GB to transfer). Restarted and everything was in place, all serial numbers intact, ready to go (except for Apple Remote Desktop, which seems to forget its serial number every time I’ve ever done a migration).
If you’re thinking of getting an Air but have heard it can’t function as your only computer, my advice is DO IT. My old MacBook Pro was my only computer, and now my MacBook Air will take over as my sole computer. I don’t see any problem.
