Richard has been a Corvair owner since buying new a 1960 700 sedan. He is author of the book, HOW TO KEEP YOUR CORVAIR ALIVE, which several of our members have used as a reference for their Corvair work. Gayle and Richard have moved back to New Mexico after spending many years in California and other places. Richard is a long-time CORSA member. Ask Jim to tell you about Richard's race car projects when they both lived in Alamogordo in the late 1960s. Joining CNM are Dan & Dawn Post from El Paso. They came up to the Tri-State Meet and decided to join CNM as well as CORSA. They hope to make it up to some more of our events. A hearty CNM welcome to Gayle, Richard, Dawn and Dan! ===== MAY MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees President Hurley Wilvert called the meeting to order at 7:35 PM. All officers were present. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as published in the newsletter. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that CNM had $826.62 in the checking account and $5,787.14 in the money market account for a total of $6,613.76. Our sponsor, Joe Trujillo, was wished a belated happy birthday. Joe was unable to attend the last meeting, so he had to eat his cake alone. It was announced that Jim Pittman suffered the loss of his father. Condolences from CNM to Jim and Heula. There was a discussion of the Las Cruces trip last month. Those who were able to go had a great time. Wayne Uhl, our member in La Luz, was unable to join us but hopes to be able to make the Tri-State met in May. Wayne Ward, our member in Las Cruces, went out of his way to host the CNM members who were there. He and his family treated everyone royally. CAR COUNCIL REPORT: Mark Martinek reported that the Car Council met on 4/26/00 at 7:30 PM and that there were 18 representatives present. The new treasurer reported that the Car Council was solvent but did not have a printed report prepared. Mike Gonzales reported on the upcoming Museum Show. The check has been received from the museum. All who participate will receive a dash plaque even if they do not pay the $5.00 entry fee. All will be given a slip of paper as they enter the lot and will be told to take the slip to the registration table after parking. Those who register and pay the $5.00 fee will be given a window card and a ballot. Registration forms will be available at the May 17th meeting. Anyone who registered last year should receive a registration form in the mail from the museum. There will be food vendors on site. NAPA will be attending to observe as a possible sponsor in 2001. NAPA will also be giving prizes throughout the day. Canopies may be set up, however no stakes may be driven into the ground or parking surface. No "FOR SALE" signs are allowed. The sale of any items, including raffle tickets, is prohibited. A list of volunteers to work the various areas is needed at the next meeting. It appears that all areas are covered except for parking. Parking workers are asked to be at the museum at 6:30 AM. Volunteers will be allowed to enter two vehicles free of entrance fee. Clubs are requested not to arrive before 7:00 AM and to use the correct entrance access road. A single payment will be made by CNM for all Tri-State participants entering the show. There will be no deletion of classes from the previous year. Foreign sports cars will be classified as Early or Late, no longer European and Japanese. A prolonged discussion then ensued of Muscle Cars vis-a-vis Pony cars. (Who Cares?) Upcoming events: the Los Lunas Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a car show to benefit the Valencia County Youth Program on Saturday, June 10th. There will not be an ALL CHEVY show this year at Reliable Chevrolet. Instead they will hold three CRUISE NIGHTS: June 8th, July 13th and Aug 10th. A Chevy 350 engine will be given away on Aug 10th. The Maloofs collection will be moved to Las Vegas, NM in June 2000. The T or C Veterans Center will hold a car show on Nov 11th. Anyone interested in more information on any event, please see Chuck Vertrees, CNM secretary, for forms and other events. I have a copy of the Car Council activities calendar. OLD BUSINESS The Tri-State was discussed. Steve Gongora has the goodie bags. Possibly we will stuff then at the Board Meeting on the 17th. Debbie reported that we had 34 registrations, 18 signed up for the photo rally, 77 for the Bar-B-Q, 35 for the show, and 64 for the banquet. There will not be any booze available at the banquet because of licensing problems. Mark has the Bar-B-Q in hand. He needs a few extra cookers and coolers. The Bar-B-Q will be from 3:00 to 7:30 PM. Bring some extra chairs if you have them. Wendell Walker has the raffle tickets; they are $1.00 each or six for $5.00. The Board has decided that CNM would help the National Chevy show by parking on the 24th of Aug. Hurley got four volunteers and Sylvan will contact them about the arraignment. There is no change in our plans for the August campout. The July 4th Santa Fe Car Show was mentioned. You must be a member of the Santa Fe club to show your car. The membership is $20.00 and either Tarmo or Wendell can tell you how to join. Everyone who brought their CORSA ballots gave them to Sylvan so they could be mailed in together. It was moved and seconded that a letter of appreciation be sent to Wayne Ward and his parents for their kindness to our members who went on the Las Cruces trip. NEW BUSINESS: Robert Gold thanked Jerry Goffe for helping him find speakers for our meetings. Wendell has a video of the salvage of some P-38's that force-landed on the Greenland icecap during World War II. He will edit it to about 30 minutes. Mark has the St Louis Convention film, which could also be shown at a future meeting. Jerry Goffe is looking for convertibles to haul stars from the train or airport to downtown in July. It looks like we have about six available. Hurley thanked Robert Gold for filling in for him while he had to be out of town. Mark Domzalski announced that as of two weeks ago, the record for ballots returned had already been broken. As of that time 11% of the CORSA membership had returned their ballots. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 PM. ===== BOARD MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees The May board meeting was held at House of Covers on May 17th. We got right into the meeting shortly after 5:00 PM and I forgot to write down everyone attending. Wendell Walker reported that we had $1,217.62 in the checking account and $5,813.27 in the money market account for a total of $7,030.89. We started right out with the Tri-State meeting which was almost at hand. Debbie had just gotten back into town and had a lot to report. She gave Wendell a big wad of checks to deposit. She had 28 reservations for the rally, 110 for the Bar-B-Q, 45-plus cars for the show and 99 for the banquet. The price was to include desert and it was discussed if we should get a special cake with decorations for the banquet, but it was decided that the time was short and we had enough to do. We have the goodie bags and items to put into them. We need to send thank you letters to the donors. We get the room at the hotel at 14:00 Friday so we can start to set up. Registration on Friday was set for 15:00 to 20:00. There are plenty of people lined up to handle the registration. The rally is all set for Saturday morning. It is scheduled to start at 08:30. Dell has gotten all of the copies made and has the sorted into envelopes. I will meet him between 07:30 and 08:00 at the start and help him get people started. Mark Domzalski has the Bar-B-Q all set with people to help him set up and cook. It was scheduled to go from 16:00 to 19:00. Mark Martinek has it all set at the Museum show. There will be space for 50 cars. We will leave the hotel at 06:30 on Sunday morning. Then the banquet is planned for 18:30 Sunday evening. It will be a FULL weekend! Between Bill Reider, Steve Gongora, Sylvan Zuercher, Dennis Pleau, Wendell Walker (and others who I am sure I have forgotten to mention) all the little details seemed to be under control. It was also noted that we needed to plan time for the Boydston award during the banquet. We took a quick adjournment of the business meeting to set up an assembly line to stuff the goodie bags. After that was done we went back to business. Hurley said that he had contacted SCCA about putting on an autocross in June. They are all booked in June, but could do it in July. A decision was tabled on this. Wendell has videos of two versions of the P-38 retrieval from Greenland, and will show one of them at the June meeting. Jim Pittman's father recently died, and it was moved and approved that CNM would send $50.00 to the American Heart Association in Jim's father's honor. Del had received a letter from the Utah club about some flags for the car. This was tabled for later discussion. Wendell is working on a CNM decal for the rear quarter window. We are out of license plates and Steve is checking on getting more made. Questions will be, should we change the design or the material when we have more made? We don't want to get another batch with paint that fades or flakes off. The meeting was finally adjourned at 18:37. ===== FOR SALE, TRADE OR WANTED WANTED: Corvair (or similar) jack. Larry Blair 821-1386 WANTED: 1961-64 convertible roof rails rear quarter window. Mark Martinek 275-3271 CNM ADS ARE FREE TO CNM MEMBERS, $5.00 TO NON-CNM MEMBERS ===== SEVEN YEARS AGO IN C.N.M. June 1993 Volume 19 Number 6 The cover showed a Rampside featured in the latest issue of Autoweek. Our speaker was State Senator Michael Wiener who brought a few samples from his extensive collection of license plates to show us. Treasurer Will said we had $1428 after BMW expenses were factored in. Debbie chaired a committee to make a bid for a CORSA national convention. We planned our participation in the Museum car show and the Alamosa Tri-State and noted a Kaiser-Frazier car show in June. LeRoy reported on the Museum car show; 200 cars showed up, nine of them CNM Corvairs. Del Patten discussed "restification" as it applies to Corvairs. What's that? "What the original might have been if the factory had hand-built a car for a specific owner." Do you want an index of Larry Claypool's "Stock is..." columns from the CORSA Communique, 1987-1993? Look no further than this issue. Quite a variety of topics! Otto Mechanic took Reo to the "filling station." Winding up the newsletter, "Changing Coil Springs" by J. Garrison. This can be a dangerous job; do it right. FOURTEEN YEARS AGO The June 1986 cover was Jim's drawing made from a 35-mm slide taken at the 1985 Museum car show. Maybe we'll see more of this some day. President Clayborne presided; Treasurer LeRoy reported $732; Bill Reider said CNM members were to park cars at the Museum car show. Otto Parts catalogs were available. Karen Jackson had a report on her "My first car" research and included a quiz to match the name with the adventure. Jim reported on the Museum show; 245 vehicles showed up and twenty were Corvairs. Finally, a newspaper blurb said "That Auto Mechanic May Not Think Much of You, Either" and offered us the car maintenance experience from a different point of view. TWENTY-ONE YEARS AGO The June 1979 cover was a photo taken at our Winrock Car Show, and the issue was full of photos of our Corvairs. The show was a great success thanks to the preparations made by Francis Boydston and Clay Keen. We planned a birthday party for May 13th at Cutler Park. We discussed whether the Club should obtain special tools for members to use. We had two poems in this issue: one lamented a bashed fender inflicted by a falling tree and the other expressed the wish that a Honda Accord would arrive in your editor's driveway. Tech tip: George Morin suggested if your heater motor was blowing fuses, you could try taking it out and lubricating the bushings. ===== ============================================================================ C O R V A I R S o f N E W M E X I C O C O M I N G E V E N T S ============================================================================ | J u n e | J u l y | A u g u s t | | : : : : 1 2 3 | : : : : : : 1 | : : 1 2 3 4 5 | | 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 | 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 | 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 | | 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 | 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 | 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 | | 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 | 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 | 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 | | 25 26 27 28 29 30 : | 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 | 27 28 29 30 31 : : | | : : : : : : : | 30 31 : : : : : | : : : : : : : | ============================================================================ Wed 7th Jun 7:30 PM Regular Meeting - GALLES CHEVROLET 1601 Lomas NE Sat 10th Jun 1:00 PM CNM Ladies at Brenda Wilvert's (1:00 to 4:00) Wed 21st Jun 5:00 PM Board Meeting - House of Covers Fri 23rd Jun 9:00 PM Newsletter Deadline - Jim Pittman Tue 4th Jul early! Once again our membership has done an excellent job of organizing an event where everyone can have fun. Even the weather cooperated and everyone I talked to had a good time. As a bonus, CNM won an award for Best Club Display at the Museum Car Show. I want to thank everyone who helped organize this event and all the people who participated. A special thanks goes out to Debbie Pleau who was the core organizer and Mark Domzalski who furnished the food for the barbecue. Thanks also goes out to Chuck Vertrees and Del Patten who organized the photo rally; to Dennis Pleau, Jerry Goffe and David Patten who helped cook at the barbecue; to Mark Martinek, Bill Reider and Jerry Goffe who helped organize the Museum Car Show; and to Mary Lou Martinek, Sylvan Zuercher, Jim Pittman, and Debbie and Ron Deck who helped run registration. Thanks also goes out to Ruth Boydston and Ilva Walker who furnished the special raffle prizes. I know there are others who helped out that I have failed to mention. I thank all of you for your help. I want to also thank all the participants who took their time to drive here for this event and to make it so enjoyable for everyone. I trust all of you had a great time in Albuquerque and that you all made it home safely. The willingness of our members to work so hard to make these events a success and the desire for our members and others who love the Corvair to participate in these events are what makes them all such an enjoyable experience. Next up is the CNM ladies get-together at my house on June 10th. After that will be the State Fair Show in July, organized by Robert Gold. See you there. Hurley Wilvert - President ===== TRI-STATE MEET REPORT Dennis Pleau Corvairs of New Mexico hosted the 2000 Tri-State meet in Albuquerque over the weekend. This event is rotated among Rocky Mountain CORSA (Denver, CO), Pikes Peak Corvair Club (Colorado Springs, CO) and CNM. It's usually a low key event held in the mountains of southern CO or northern NM. The normal schedule includes a rally or economy run or poker run, a parade and a car show/display. It's held in the "mud season" (after ski season but before Memorial day) when the little towns are hungry for business. (Hank, it keeps the banquet prices down). This year the New Mexico Council of Car Clubs who, in conjunction with the Albuquerque Museum, put on the largest car show in New Mexico, offered to make the Corvair the featured marque in honor to the 40th anniversary of its introduction. At last year's Tri-State meet we proposed and got agreement from the other clubs to have CNM host the 2000 Tri-State in the "big city" to take advantage of the NMCCC/Albuquerque Museum event, and the show was on. (Pikes Peak will take their turn next year.) Friday afternoon and evening was a time of checking in and socializing. Saturday morning was the photo rally put on by Del Patten and Chuck Vertrees in the scenic (if somewhat dry and brown) mountain areas east of the Sandias. Del says about twenty-three cars made the run and the winners were Ed and Jean Olwine. New CNM members Gayle and Richard Finch performed the route sweep. Everyone enjoyed driving through the somewhat out-of-the-ordinary scenery. Debbie and I weren't able to participate because we were doing the same thing as Bryan (the Dodgers played good but we don't keep score). Our president (Domzalski, not that clown) hosted a barbecue for everybody Saturday evening at Tiguex Park near Old Town, right across from the car show location. That evening some of us held flashlights while Steve Goodman helped out in an unscheduled tech session where emergency clutch cable, pulley and wiring repairs were performed. Sunday we were all up early for the museum show. All forty-three Corvairs were parked up front by the entrance to the museum. When it was all over Laura Wilshire was the big winner. Her red 1964 Spyder convertible (some of you know it as a Cole participant in the last few internationals) took home awards for third place 1960-1969 cars for the whole show, Car Council special award for best early Corvair, and first place balloting for best early open by the Corvair owners in attendance. Mark Domzalski took third in the 1954 to 2000 trucks as well as the Corvair balloting for best Forward Control with his 1962 Rampside. Walter Hundertmark took the Car Council special FC award with his 1964 Greenbrier. The Car Council special award for the best late Corvair went to Bill Woodman with his 1965 Monza coupe. The rest of the Corvair-owners-only awards went to Ben Benzel for his 1962 Monza coupe, Farrell and Dorothy Coy for their 1965 Monza convertible, Tarmo and Kay Sutt for their 1965 Corsa coupe and Steve and Rita Gongora for their 1961 Lakewood. Ben Benzel's Monza was also awarded best of show by the Corvair owners. Other awards at the museum show to Corvair owners were Best Club Display to Corvairs of New Mexico, and a Car Council Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Bill Reider. The longest distance award went to Randy Kelly from Clinton, Utah. We ended the Tri-State with a banquet Sunday night. There were the usual door prizes and two lucky Coloradans won the woven tapestry and the Corvair quilt donated by Ilva Walker and Ruth Boydston, respectively. Tarmo Sutt presented the Francis Boydston Award to Sylvan Zuercher for his many years of perpetuating the Corvair hobby. After the banquet we said our goodbyes for another year and went our different ways, having enjoyed another fairly laid-back gathering of friends. The Tri-State will reconvene next year in Manitou Springs, Colorado, May 18-20th, 2001. Look for more information about this event from the Pikes Peak folks in the coming months. On a side note, Dennis, Debbie, Michael and Steven Pleau announced that we will be moving to Colorado Springs this summer. We have joined Pikes Peak Corvair Club, just in time to help out on the next Tri-State. ===== AN EVENING WITH THE NEW MEXICORDS Review by Ilva Walker On May 8 at the Highland Theatre on Central, The New Mexicords with a little help from some ACLOA soloists put on a production they called MASH - taking a few liberties here and there of course. The star of the show was Mr. Del Patten as Klinger wearing a Kim Patten designer outfit that simply took one's breath away. Another sterling participant was Mr. Charles Vertrees in the SENIOR STAFF quartet, a foursome who were admitted to the Albuquerque Hall of Fame for all their volunteer harmonizing at Senior Centers. I think there were some other MASH members but obviously their offerings were as nothing compared to Mr. Patten's and Mr. Vertrees'. Actually there were several quartets who performed, none of whom we need concern ourselves with. (Yes I ended that sentence with a preposition - and that's not the only license I'll take with the English language.) But the BIGGIE was the National Winning quartet, REVIVAL, who won the 1998 national award as quartet of the year. They brought the house down with a gospel number, "It Is Well with My Soul." I mean they ROCKED. The New Mexicords have a new director I'm told - a very young, very enthusiastic young man whose name I forget, but that's okay because even if I remembered it and wrote it here no one out there would remember it. What we do remember are the terrific arrangements and the nice smooth line in all their songs. And the great variety of comic numbers, love songs, patriotic songs and a few that fit into all three categories. The lighting and stage decoration were exceptionally good, too. Which added up to a delightful evening of antics and songs. I do have one teeny tiny complaint. The first song was about suicide - oh, really, what a way to start a "fun" evening. Someone out there doesn't understand the correct order of songs for a program. Start with an UPPER, guys, AN UPPER!!!!!!! ===== BILL AND LEE REIDER FIFTIETH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Several CNM members congregated at Glory Hall on Wednesday May 24th to help with a surprise wedding anniversary celebration. Many friends of Bill and Lee were there when they were escorted in, not knowing the real reason for the occasion. The party was a great success, not least because there was plenty of great food. Everyone made much of the pair, expressing their appreciation for their accomplishments over the years and making wishes for continued prosperity for another fifty years. At that point, did we hear Bill or Lee say, "Ohhhhh nooooo!" or was that just the wind outside? Anyway, a great party and a good time was had by all. ===== CNM LADIES JUNE Anne Mae Gold June's CNM Ladies will meet at Brenda and Hurley Wilvert's home. It'll be on Saturday, June 10. Anne Mae ===== Subject: (VV) Re: TRI-STATE MEET IN ALBUQUERQUE From: Dennis & Debbie Pleau ( dpleau @ efortress.com ) Date: Mon, 22 May 2000 20:04:52 -0700 From: Steve Goodman ( rearengine.steve @ worldnet.att.net ) To all: Finished a nice weekend this afternoon when Ruth and I returned from Albuquerque where CNM hosted the annual TRI-STATE CORVAIR MEET. This year it was in conjunction with a large museum car show, over 500 cars ranging from pre-WWI restored to sports cars to trucks and motorcycles; even bicycles. The CORVAIR was the honored marque, being 40 years old. CNM provided a great facility and a photo rally on Saturday plus food both nights. Thanks a lot to Debbie and Dennis Pleau and to every CNM member for a nice weekend.
