FROM THE PRESIDENT
GREG NELSON

Christmas Party
Don't forget that CNM's Christmas Party is being held at Mimi's Cafe on
Saturday December 17th at 1:30pm. We were fortunate to get this time slot as our
usual time was already taken and I've heard (from other clubs I'm a member of)
that restaurants are filling up fast with Christmas Party reservations. Hope to
see you all there!

Tattoo
My three-year tattoo drought was lifted with an appropriate Corvair
themed design: a Spyder Spider. Thanks go to Larry Blair for letting me borrow
one of his pristine Spyder Wheel Covers. The artist took a direct photo of the
wheel cover and did her magic on her iPad with a drawing app. It took about two
hours and yes, this one hurt quite a bit. It's a sensitive area. But since I own
a Spyder it was worth it.

The A-Team
On November 19th I met Tarmo, Geoff and Ray at Pat Hall's house to try
and figure out why his turbo engine was not running. To get it to run at all
required spraying fuel directly into the carburetor. This was a great learning
experience for me as the amount of knowledge on hand was extensive. It was
surmised that the accelerator pump was not working properly so that was
disassembled first.
Geoff Johnson examined the accelerator pump assembly and said the diaphragm was
in good condition. The timing was checked next and that was normal too. Since
Pat had at least six other turbo carbs lying around it was decided to try one of
these. Once the carb was removed from the engine the problem was obvious. The
carburetor installation gasket was damaged so the carb was just sucking air! It
was replaced, and no surprise, the engine ran normally. All-in-all this was a
very good learning experience.

1964 Monza Update
I've managed to install a new Clark's door panel on the 1964 Monza. I
happened to casually mention to Larry that this was my current project while I
was there picking up the Spyder Wheel Cover and I showed him a picture. He
pointed out that I needed to tuck the door paper into the drain slot that runs
the length of the door. Yikes. What was there before was clear plastic held on
with very old duct tape and it was not tucked into the drain slot, so I had no
idea. I should have consulted the many reference books I have instead of relying
on what was removed. Lesson learned. I'll install the second door panel after
Thanksgiving and then start on removing the rust in the trunk with a new 40 grit
sanding drum on an Eastwood Surface Conditioning Tool.

The Heils' Corvair
I sent out an email a couple of weeks ago to announce that Bill Heil
would like to sell his Corvair. If anyone is interested, please give him a call
before he announces it to the general public.

That's all I have for December. Everyone please have a safe holiday and I'll see
ya at the December meeting.

Cheers -- Gregory Nelson -- CNM President

DECEMBER'S CHRISTMAS PARTY
BRENDA STICKLER

This was written the day after Thanksgiving. I want to state that I give thanks
for the wonderful members of our club. As a member of the board, I want to let
the members know what we have appreciated your support this year. There is so
much talent in this car club. Some offer up great ideas for outings. Other
members have great knowledge on how to keep the Corvairs running. We have those
members willing to give us bargains on Corvair parts. There are some of our
members active with the Car Council in Albuquerque. Then all those members that
help us with our flyers, newsletter, and logos for Tri-States. We also have
members who share their cooking talents with us. Your present board is staying
on another year... Please, Help us make it another great year!

I did confirm with Mi-Mi's, located at 4316 "The 25th Way NE" just off
Jefferson. We have the private room at 1:30 PM on Saturday December 17th, and if
you come to the Saturday December 3 meeting at 10:00 AM we will remind you again
about our Christmas gathering.

If there is an event or outing you have in mind for 2023, just send me an e-mail
and we'll bring it up at our meetings.

Look forward to hearing those engines roaring .... Thanks to each one of you. --
Brenda

WHERE WERE YOU IN 1962?
JIM PITTMAN

Sixty years ago, December 1962, I was just getting started on my Air Force
career with years of adventures ahead of me. After fourteen months as a lowly
airman I was a brand-new second lieutenant checking out of Officer School at
Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas, about to leave for my next duty station. I
was driving my new 1962 Ford Fairlane four-door, ordered from my dad's favorite
Ford dealer just the way I wanted it. Corvairs were very far from my thoughts,
not even on the horizon yet. I sort of knew what they were but it would never
have occurred to me to buy one. Just like my dad, I was a Ford man all the way.

The idea of "sports cars" was even further out beyond the horizon. I had never
thought I'd want to drive one of those expensive toys, much less become
infatuated with owning a little high-performance two-seat British car that was
perfect for curvy back roads. That was all in the future for me in December
1962.

There was one thing about my new 1962 Fairlane that would be true of the Corvair
I would eventually buy: its size. Not a big car, not a small car, just the
perfect car size for me. My mother had a 1957 Ford; too big! The 1960 Falcon was
too small. Ford made the Fairlane just for me! Chevy made the late model Corvair
just for me too, but I did not know it yet.

Events and activities of 1962 that I experienced or learned about: Leaving home
for a new life in "The North" because the military sent me to a research lab in
Ohio. Learning about the three orbits of Marine colonel John Glenn in the
nation's new space program. Becoming involved, somewhat indirectly, with that
space program in my work in the Air Force. Getting a "Hi-Fi" stereo system and
starting to collect classical music records. Getting an electronic watch: a
Bulova Accutron. Starting to learn how to drive on snowy roads. Traveling all
around the Midwest including trips to Indianapolis, Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit,
upstate New York, Washington D.C. and the backwoods of West Virginia.

Some of our club members already were Corvair owners in 1962. Not me. I was a
couple of years away from discovering sports cars, buying one and wanting to
learn all there was to know about high-performance driving. Then a couple more
years and my concept of the perfect American sports car would be fulfilled with
a 1966 Corsa coupe with an exotic turbocharged engine. That turned out to be the
most significant car I ever bought for the way my automotive life style would
develop.

And I can claim that now, sixty years later, even though I no longer own a
Corvair, I am vicariously still living that lifestyle every month in the pages
of this newsletter.

TAR PIE -- REPRINTED FROM ENCHANTED CORVAIRS -- APRIL 1980
GEORGE MORIN

If you have ever used a can of aerosol undercoating on your Corvair, you may
have found that when the can is cold, the metal "marble" inside the can doesn't
move and the can doesn't spray very well. My old trick was to put the can in the
oven and heat it up a little. This worked great and I have undercoated two
Corvairs this way. WARNING: This can be dangerous to your health!

One weekend I was heavily involved in restoring my Lakewood. My wife had
finished baking a pie and I decided to use the still warm oven. Insuring it was
turned off, I put two cans of undercoating in the oven. After thirty minutes I
removed one can and started undercoating inside the Lakewood's doors. The warm
tar was spraying into the corners and crevices very nicely. Then I heard a loud
boom and then a screaming wife.

The can I had left in the oven had exploded. The explosion ripped the oven door
off and everything in the kitchen within ten feet of the oven was sprayed with
tar. That included my wife and the freshly baked pie. No one was physically
hurt.

The clean-up procedure took three gallons of cleaning solvent, ten pounds of
rags, two gallons of new interior paint, four days of work, and one good lawyer
for the divorce.

My new suggestion for warming up the undercoating cans is to use warm water in a
pan, outside your house, in a vacant lot.

JIM ARNHOLZ AND CNM

He was the "Voice of the Journal" for decades and had a passion for people who
got a raw deal.

That's how Ollie Reed Jr described writer Jim Arnholz in the Albuquerque
Journal, October 17th, 2022.

For years his column was read by thousands of subscribers. I was one of those
readers and always looked forward to his point of view on a variety of topics. I
remember when he wrote of the reasons for changing his name to "Jim Belshaw" and
I wondered how many journalists changed their name and remain active. He did,
continuing as an active journalist for many more years as if nothing had
happened. I remember my regret when he finally retired.

Back in 1986 Sylvan Zuercher suggested for our Christmas dinner party that we
invite Jim Arnholz to speak to the club. Sylvan wrote, "We will have Albuquerque
Journal columnist Jim Arnholz for our speaker. He may or may not talk about
Corvairs. If you bring along your copy of his recent book "Semi-Native"
published by UNM Press, you can probably get him to autograph it for you. We who
read his colunm every day anticipate an interesting talk." I brought my copy of
"Semi-Native" and indeed he gave us an interesting talk. Alas, I don't remember
the topic.

In 1988 president Clayborne Souza announced that we had asked him to return to
that year's Christmas dinner. As it happened, the meeting room was furnished
with high-backed chairs, making it impossible for a speaker to be heard and
seen. We reluctantly cancelled the talk and asked Jim for a "rain-check" to
return at a later date. He graciously agreed. By then his name had mysteriously
become Jim Belshaw.

DIGITAL MANIPULATION OF PHOTOS
JIM PITTMAN

This month's cover is unusual. It is the result of digital manipulation of a
photo I made at our North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center meeting place in
August 2015 just after sunset.

Because the camera is pointing directly toward the setting sun, most of the
picture is quite over-exposed. Probably you could see there's a car there but
have no idea what kind of car. Photoshop (c) to the rescue! Actually I also used
GraphicConverter (c) as well.

The top half is pretty well exposed, so the top and bottom halves had to be
processed separately. Photoshop provides ways to do this sort of thing, but I
physically separated the photos into a top half and a bottom half. I applied the
LEVELS tool to the dark half while leaving the light half pretty much as it was.
Then I re-combined the two halves.

A little cleaning up around the edges and cropping to fit the page dimensions
and the job was done.

I thought the photo was a good one but not usable as it came out of the camera.
It seemed worthwhile to spend a few minutes doing digital enhancements. I hope
you like it.

Actually, for photos in the newsletter, I have been doing a little digital
touching up from time to time. The photo on page 9 of the April 2021 newsletter
is a good example. Since it was intended as an April's Fool illustration I did
not hesitate to make up a completely bogus scene with a Navy F4U Corsair flying
over David's 1963 Monza convertible. Usually my digital meddling is much more
subtle and does not do too much violence to reality.

The yellow Spyder in the cover photo, by the way, belonged to Larry Blair. I
don't know if he still owns it. It's the same car seen on the cover of CORSA
Communique many years ago. Thanks, Larry!

SEVEN YEARS AGO [ DECEMBER 2022 Vol 48 Nr 12 ISSUE 567 ]

2015 V.41 Nr 12 #483

Cover: Robert Gold's bright blue late convertible was at House of Covers for the
Christmas party. President Ray Trujillo said he bought an RCA Victor AM radio at
the auction. Key members have been going to Taos to scout and prepare for our
coming Tri-State. Jim provided Article 4 in his series named "Zero to $10,000 in
Several Easy Steps" as his 1965 Monza was on its way to being fully restored,
or, to soaking up a full $10,000, whichever came first. No, it never got to that
condition. Heula reported on news stories about recent tragedies and the
reaction of children. An index to articles published in 2015 finished up the
issue.

2008 V.34 Nr 12 #399

Cover: a lineup of six similar late models at the TVI campus. Or was this a
photoshop exercise? Heula provided some history on Wendell's automotive and CNM
career. President Mike predicted a serious recession on its way, suggesting we
buy parts from our Corvair venders while we could. Brenda reported on plans for
the Taos Tri-State. Lee and Emma listed items needed for our Christmas donation.
Richard Finch discussed causes of the rash of bad fuel pumps and suggested
rebuilding your mechanical pumps with quality materials. An article suggested we
are all changing our oil too often and should buy better oil and change it at
7,000 miles.

2001 V.27 Nr 12 #315

Cover: a lineup of four similar late model coupes. At our meeting at Galles,
Wendell reported we had $5,340.48 in the bank. Mark Martinek gave the Car
Council report. Jerry Goffe announced that he is now an official docent and
guide at Bosque del Apache. The CNM Ladies group met. President Gold told about
the awesome power of his Corvair-Olds V-8 after adjusting the throttle linkage.
We planned a potluck/auction in November. Tarmo and Steve received praise for
our great tour to Shidoni. We hoped for improved relations with the Galles
security team. From Virtual Vairs: Were there Corvair clubs before CORSA? Yes.
Several were listed. Tech tips: cylinder head temperature, carb synchronizing.
We had a photo of nearly every CNM member. Finally, the index to all the 2001
newsletters.

1994 V.20 Nr 12 #231

Cover: we were festive with toys, singing bears, a couple of small Corvairs.
Steve and Rita reported on the auction and pot-luck. Fifty items were auctioned
in sixty minutes, bringing in $270. President Larry missed the meeting because
of a hunting trip but the deer eluded him. Larry told of a high-speed climb up
Sedillo Hill. His Spyder's temperature gauge soared off the scale because of a
separated harmonic balancer. Sylvan reported on the Palm Springs Great Fanbelt
Toss and Swap Meet. He sold most of what he took and bought a few things. From
the internet, What if politicians campaigned via e-mail? The Sirloin Stockade
hosted our Christmas Party. Technical material included the wonder of a
wandering FC which had a major crack in its unit body, leaving the steering gear
box to literally float! Otto Mechanic refuted the theory that filling your tires
with helium would reduce weight and increase gas mileage.

1987 V.13 Nr 12 #147

Cover: A cut-it-out-yourself jigsaw puzzle. We had $451 in the bank. The speaker
at our Christmas party was to be the Journal's Jim Arnholtz (Jim Belshaw) of the
Albuquerque Journal. President Reider suggested activities for the coming year.
Jerry showed a series of Corvair-related films. Jim reported on Sylvan's
Architecture Tour. Steve answered to last month's Football Quiz.

1980 V.6 Nr 12 #63

The cover showed our new officers were Sylvan Zuercher, Bill Reider, Mary
Twilley and Robin DeVore. We planned a "Ladies' Day" tech session to cover
common car problems and fixes. How could we help out with the 1981 national
CORSA convention in Denver? A tech tip suggested using a magnetic drain plug in
the oil pan to catch stray metal particles. An article suggested that low-riders
were superior to hot-rodders. An index for the 1980 newsletter finished up the
issue.
