The Grey Book is the first-ever online journal devoted exclusively to academic work by students in the field of Tolkien Studies. An annual , peer-reviewed publication sponsored by University Honors Program at the University of New Mexico, The Grey Book publishes multidisciplinary approaches to J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional and scholarly work primarily by undergraduate students. Our aim is to recognize high quality academic articles by students whose work might not otherwise receive professional attention. In addition, The Grey Book aims to provide its editorial staff for the publication with professional experience related to writing for and producing work for academic audiences.

Our mission is to recognize high quality, academic articles by undergraduate students whose work might not otherwise receive professional attention. In addition, The Grey Book aims to provide the undergraduate students who serve as editorial staff for the publication and those whose work is accepted for publication with professional experience related to writing for and producing work for academic audiences. We invite submission of articles by undergraduate students on any topic dealing with Tolkien’s fictional or scholarly work.

Each volume of the journal publishes 2-6 articles by students and up to one graduate student article. Because graduate students typically have many more resources for showcasing their work than undergraduates, the majority of articles published in The Grey Book are by undergraduate students. All articles considered for publication must be
nominated by a faculty member of a university or community college.

Future issues of The Grey Book will solicit article submissions from undergraduate students at other universities and internationally. Currently, The Grey Book is in the process of adding faculty and students from other universities to its editorial board.

Submission Guidelines:
Submissions must be written in English and formatted according to MLA style. No articles will be considered unless accompanied by a brief letter of support from a university or community college faculty member. Manuscripts must be double-spaced and should not exceed twenty-five pages in length. Include the author's name, university or college, date the article was completed, an e-mail address, phone number, and snail mail address. All submissions must be submitted electronically in Word or WordPerfect to Leslie Donovan at ldonovan@unm.edu.

Deadline for 2008 issue December 1, 2008.
