Boot Camps Brief Overview
By Jenna Sessions, PEP305 Student

Boot camps are exercise programs that are based on military training procedures and used as a means of fitness training. There are many different kinds of boot camps that are used just for fun, for discipline purposes and for training for different events. Some boot camps focus on specifics such as training to carry a heavy backpack like they do in the military and others focus on cardio and weight training. Some boot camps even focus on nutritional factors. Some boot camps are run through other organizations like martial arts centers, gymnastics gyms and regular fitness facilities.

There are a lot of boot camps that target kids with behavioral problems and also a lot of boot camps that target weight loss and fitness. Most of the boot camps promote exercise as a healthy lifestyle and a means of 'getting away' or taking a vacation from the normal lifestyle. Some boot camps don't relate to fitness at all and are basically just summer camps that specialize in some theme like computers or acting (these are not fitness boot camps but can also be called boot camps). Some boot camps are targeted around kids with disabilities to help them and encourage and active lifestyle. Boot camp is a common name for a hard workout that is inspired by military training. Military boot camp involves different approaches including classes in specific fields, physical training, and mental training. There are a lot of boot camps for teens that seem to inspire good attitudes and benefits the parents by teaching the teens responsibility. Boot camps can be incredibly strict depending on the goal of the camp. There are boot camps for extreme sports and boot camps for specific sports like gymnastics, soccer, cheerleading, baseball etc. These boot camps focus on sports specific exercises and training that is generally specific to benefit the playing of that sport. Boot camps are traditionally known for being very tough and also for getting the people in very good shape. They are often run by highly fit individuals that appreciate working out and being healthy. These camps may help inspire people to have a healthier lifestyle and also to get in shape.

Some of the most well-known camps that can be considered 'boot camps' are on shows featuring very overweight individuals. These individuals are often sent to a camp or placed in an environment where their diet and exercise are controlled and monitored by fitness experts. In this environment the person is encouraged to push themselves and learn to live a healthier lifestyle. The likelihood of this being a real lifestyle is not very high so the people in the show have to learn to adapt a healthy lifestyle to their original work schedules etc.

The idea of boot camp is dedicating yourself to an intense workout routine for a period of time that would normally be taken up with other things. In the military, often people are taken to a different place and stay there for a period of time while they complete the boot camp or training. It is a short term intense workout that can boost lifestyle, energy, metabolism etc. One of the biggest benefits of boot camps is that the instructor will motivate you more than you would push yourself. Also, if the instructor is in very good shape (as many of them are) the participants will be more likely to be inspired and want to work out harder to be as in shape as the instructor. Most boot camps will require you to sign a waiver and do a medical/health screening for your own personal safety.

In conclusion, boot camps are growing in popularity because of their rigorous nature and highly effective workouts. Many of these programs inspire people to live a healthy lifestyle and most of them are fun, involving friends, teams and different kinds of equipment (or no equipment). Try one!
