PEP 500 Exercise Science Seminar

Welcome Message to Seminar Students

PEP 500 is for Exercise Science Graduate students in the Exercise Science Program. During the last several semesters, I have done several different projects with ES Seminar students. However, the Research 'Narrative' Review Projects we began in Fall 2021 have been OUTSTANDING. Plus, I could tell the students really learned the MOST (and enjoyed the most) from this project. Therefore, your SEMINAR Project is to Complete a Research Review on a SPECIAL Topic of YOUR Interest in the field of Exercise Science (see possible topics at bottom of this page). NOTE: There are NO class meeting times with Seminar. This semester, Dr. Mermier is teaming up with me to work on your articles. Each of you will work one-on-one with us on your project. Please read below for your steps to follow.

Your goal is to Author a paper to be submitted to ACSM's Health and Fitness Journal, a peer-review journal, conidered the most prestigious professional journal in the world. Please download the author guideines: http://edmgr.ovid.com/fit/accounts/ifauth.htm

A timely research review can lead to new scientific insights and is often widely read in the professional and scientific communities. For the review to be useful, however, it needs to be compiled in a professional way. Here are some guidelines in a 'nonverbal' YOUTUBE video for writing an effective research review. CLICK HERE

YOUR GRADE FOR SEMINAR: YOUR FINAL GRADE FOR SEMINAR WILL BE BASED ON THE RUBRIC AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE, BASED ON YOUR WRITING. PLEASE NOTE THERE IS A 5-POINT (FROM TOTAL PTS) DEDUCTION IF LATE ON ANY OF THE 4 STEP DEADLINES OUTLINED BELOW!

Seminar Project, Rubric, and Due Dates
STEP 1: Topic Selection due Friday, January 31 by 12 midnight: Send Dr. Kravitz the TOPIC you would like to research. I will provide feedback on the topic to laser focus you on your direction with this topic. Scroll down below for many ideas of topics you may wish to research. These are just ideas. I want you to choose a SPECIAL TOPIC in Exercise Science that you really want to research and understand.

STEP 2: Reference list due by Friday, February 21 by midnight: Collect 5-8 articles from scientific journals published within the last 7 years on your TOPIC. You can use experimental articles, research review articles, and meta-analysis articles. Use only articles; do not use any books.

List all journal references following ACSM Writing Guidelines format: http://edmgr.ovid.com/fit/accounts/ifauth.htm

STEP 3: Topical Outline due by Friday, March 28 by midnight: Importantly, the Topical Outline gives you the first major writing strategy of how you wish to proceed with writing the article. "It is your WRITING Road Map." There is no set number of topics: break this up in a way you feel works appropriately for your research review. BELOW IS A TOPICAL OUTLINE EXAMPLE IF I WAS WRITING A RESEARCH REVIEW ON ECCENTRIC TRAINING. Please BOLD TYPE each major topic heading in your article.

Here is an example of what you will submit to me for Step 3.
Introduction: (Brief Introduction of the History of Eccentric Training. Finish the introduction with an overview of what major topics you are covering in the article.)
What are the different types of Eccentric Training? (Briefly explain what you will cover)
How Effective is the Eccentric Emphasis Technique? (Briefly explain what you will cover)
How Effective is the Supramaximal Eccentric Technique? (Briefly explain what you will cover)
How Effective is the Two Up One Down Technique? (Briefly explain what you will cover)
Research Findings on Eccentric Exercise for Improving Strength
(Briefly explain what you will cover)
Research Findings on Eccentric Exercise for Increasing Hypertrophy (Briefly explain what you will cover)
Research Findings on Eccentric Training for Special Populations (Briefly explain what you will cover)
Conclusion

STEP 4: Article Submission (electronically) due by FRIDAY, May 2 by midnight: Complete a 5-10 page paper of your research topic. Write your paper with main TOPIC HEADINGS BOLDED from your Topical Outline. Feel free to elaborate/change/edit your Topical Outline as you progress. Make sure you cover content from each of your articles. Your paper should be typed and double spaced. It should include a TITLE, YOUR NAME, INTRODUCTION, BODY OF THE ARTICLE, CONCLUSION and REFERENCES. Reminder, you should utilize 5 to 8 references for this project.

Citations within text: PLEASE CITE REFERENCES WITHIN TEXT
In a research review, whenever you state a fact, specific content, a statistic, provide a definition, or a finding from another paper, you need a citation. It is O.K. to have a LOT of citations to verify your content.
For within text citations, use this format: (Johnson, 2016) or (Smith, Voida, and Harfort, 2018)
For example:
This stretching method is referred to as the contract-relax agonist-contract method (Sharman, Cresswell, and Rick, 2019). OR Sharman, Cresswell and Rick (2019) recommend this type of stretching. OR Andersen (2020) suggests that the foundational determinants of flexibility are a multi-factorial cluster of elements.

After your conclusion, please list references following ACSM Health and Fitness Guidelines

WHAT YOU SUBMIT TO ME: When completed, you submit (electronically) the 5-10 page paper on "YOUR TOPIC" and the PDFs of the articles you used as references.
