Course Description:
This course was developed at the request of graduate students in the Exercise Science Program. Since 1986, the Exercise Science Seminar has been a required course for masters and Ph.D. students in our program. Since 1998, undergraduate students majoring in exercise science have been required to enroll in PEP 391 Problems and to attend this weekly seminar for one semester.
This weekly seminar is an excellent vehicle for the Exercise Science Faculty to communicate with students in our program. Information about graduate school requirements, course offerings, laboratory research projects, grant writing, funding opportunities for research, employment opportunities, presentation skills, certification programs as well as current research in the field is provided.
All new graduate students are required to enroll in this course their first or second semester semester in the program. Thereafter, all undergraduate and graduate students in our program are strongly encouraged to attend seminar every semester until graduation.
This weekly seminar also serves as a forum for exchange of research. Graduate students present their dissertation proposals, masters thesis and dissertation results, and results from other research projects in which they participated. First year and undergraduate students often times use the seminar as a journal club, presenting a recently published paper dealing with a topic related to the students interest. Students are given feedback about their projects and presentation skills and are given the opportunity to answer questions and defend their research.
Instructional Format:
The primary format for this course is presentation and discussion, with question and answer periods. Also, some tours of facilities may be included.
Student Evaluation:
Your grade is based on attendance and participation in the seminar. Each student will work on their own and prepare one Power Point research presentation. The presentation will be graded pass or fail. Each student is allowed ONE absence from the seminar. Thereafter, your grade will be lowered as follows: 2 absences=B; 3 absences=C; 4 absences or more = F.
SPECIAL NOTE: PPT presentations are due on Tuesday (the night prior to your presentation) by 12 midnight. Late submissions are subject to cancellation.
