LOGAN'S LITERATURE AND LAWS OF LEARNING 12/31/99 ABRIDGED QUAD-L DATABASE: Preface The Quad-L database can be conseptualized as an abbreviated version of Psychological Abstracts of publications in the domain. It first condenses the reference to a single line. It then condenses the abstract into one or more lines expressing the main idea or principal finding reported in the publication. The result is an efficient source of information. Root abstracts I have coined the term "root abstract" for what is substantially an abstract of the abstract of a publication. The function of a root abstract is to provide the shortest possible summary of the essential information about the empirical outcome or the conceptual propositions described in the publication. By their very nature, abstracts suppress detailed information nd the more abstract the statement, the greater the amount of information suppressed. But I believe that, for many purposes, what we really want to know is the critical essence of the original presentation. These basic ideas, these core messages, the analyze, and to organize. I hasten to emphasize the fact that root abstracts can be deceptive. Some of the suppressed information may actually be critical to a correct understanding, and interpretive errors can readily occur in the abstracting process. Over-reliance on root abstracts could be misleading, and this anger is greater the less knowledgeable a person already is about the topic. There is simply no easy substitute for intimate familiarity with the literature in its unabridged form. In one sense, I have been liberal as regards the number of root abstract sentences that I have included. I believe that all publications (except some comments and reviews) that made their way into the archival literature deserve at least a one-line note in a compilation of this nature. It is also the case that the same root abstract may sometimes be duplicated in order to be retrieved under more than one heading. However, my own guiding principle has been conservation of space. This principle does not guarantee parsimony in a systematic sense; brevity is not analytic simplicity. But it does seem plausible that the more compactly the pieces of a conceptual puzzle are stated, the more likely will a parsimonious organization become apparent.
