转 Zhuan: Turning, Spinning, Circling
A Film by Tami Blumenfield and Jiaxin Wang
This observational film juxtaposes five sequences filmed in southwest China's Mosuo, or Na, villages in 2023. Visual anthropologist Jiaxin Wangfollowed anthropologist Tami Blumenfield into homes of old friends and their children to produce a mesmerizing window into their lives. As people sit around a hearth, join together to coil thread, walk slowly around a village, work together to transform steaming rice into small cakes, and dance around a bonfire, they honor the legacies of their ancestors while also creating new ways of living. Shot in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains in an area where Tibetan Buddhism permeates people's lives, the film shows the cycles and circles of generations of women and their families.
