About SHRI

The Southwest Hispanic Research Institute (SHRI) promotes multidisciplinary research on the Latino/Hispanic populations of the United States and fosters public service regarding the hispano and mexicano communities of New Mexico. To this end it obtains outside support for research activity, offers an intellectual home for its faculty associates, engages the University in the Hispanic community, and invites that community to participate in the University. SHRI organizes conferences, publishes a series of working papers and monographs, and sponsors public lectures and research seminars on Latino issues.

From its inception, SHRI has advocated for access and equity at UNM and for the expansion of the Hispanic educational "pipeline" in the state of New Mexico. Accordingly, it undertakes educational and public service partnerships, highlights effective administrative policies and practices, and provides leadership in the hiring of tenure-stream faculty, the retruitment and mentoring of students, and the development of culturally informed curricula and pedagogy. Since 2005 it has engaged as a partner in Central New Mexico Enlace and with the Albuquerque Public Schools, for whom it has administered a service grant that seeks to promote parental involvement in education.

With the early leadership provided by Dr. Richard Griego (Department of Mathematics, now emeritus) and Tobías Durán (Chicano Studies, now Center for Regional Studies), SHRI was founded in 1980 through the combined efforts of faculty, staff, students, and community members. Two of its direectors, Dr. José Rivera (1982-1994) and Dr. Felipe Gonzales (1996-2003) provided direction for a combined total of 19 years. Other faculty members who served as directors of SHRI have been Dr. David Maciel, Ambassador Mari-Luci Jaramillo, Dr. Eligio Padilla and Professor Margaret Montoya. SHRI's current director, appointed in 2006, is Dr. LM García y Griego.

Currently, SHRI has 48 faculty associates from the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Fine Arts, Education, Pharmacy, University College, and the Schools of Architecture and Planning, Law, and Medicine, and the Zimmerman Library.
