  • Nervous system control for speech
  • Phonetic codes for vowels and consonants
  • Coarticulation
    • Traditional theories
    • Articulatory phonology/gesture theories

Objectives

  • Name the parts of the brain involved in the central nervous system control of speech
  • Identify the cranial nerves involved in controlling movements of the pharynx, mandible, tongue, and lips
  • Explain the phonetic code for vowels including tongue height, tongue advancement, and lip rounding
  • Explain the phonetic code for consonants including place of articulation, manner of articulation, and voicing
  • Describe forward and backward coarticulation and recognize examples of them
