Adjustments of Laryngeal Apparatus
  • Abduction of vocal folds
  • Adduction of vocal folds
  • Change in length of vocal folds
  • Change in position of larynx in neck
  • Control variables
    • Laryngeal opposing pressure
    • Laryngeal airway resistance
    • Glottal size and configuration
    • Stiffness and mass of vocal folds
  • Nervous system control of phonation
Objectives
  • Describe the actions of the muscles used in abduction and adduction of the vocal folds
  • Describe the actions of the muscles used in changing the length of the vocal folds
  • Describe the actions of the muscles used in changing the position of the larynx in the neck
  • Explain laryngeal opposing pressure and laryngeal airway resistance
  • Identify the cranial nerves involved in sending motor commands to muscles of the larynx
