SHS 310 Anatomy and Physiology of Human Communication

Resonance in speech production
  • Coupling between nasal and oral cavities
    • Coupling for sustained vowels, fricatives, nasals
    • Coupling during running speech
  • Development of VP function
  • Measuring VP function
  • Disorders of VP function
  • Treatment of hypernasality
Objectives
  • Describe the status of the velopharyngeal port for sustained vowels, fricatives, and nasals and identify the cavities through which air flows for each type of sound.
  • Briefly explain the development of velopharyngeal function from infancy to three years of age.
  • Explain why adenoidectomy could result in velopharyngeal dysfunction.
  • Describe how VP function can be observed and measured using direct visualization, X-ray imaging, aeromechanical techniques, and acoustic techniques.
  • Explain the effect of velopharyngeal dysfunction on speech.
  • Identify functional and organic causes for VP dysfunction.
