Poem
for Yemanja, 1988
Constructed
in Brazil after attending the ceremonies for Yemanja, the Afro-Brazilian
deity of the ocean and Mother of the Fishes. The piece consists of seven
wooden shelves, each containing old bottles filled with water from various
places around the world, collected by myself or friends. It is interesting
to create a new geography: a river in Africa sits on the shelf next to
one in New York.
