Michael Ceschiat

Bio

Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, received a BFA in ceramics from the Columbus College of Art and Design.

A significant impact on Michael's understanding of the ceramic medium was the experience of working for professional ceramic artist and professor Ban Kajitani while pursuing his degree. Ban arranged for study after college with Akai potter and ceramic artist Ichizo Mori of Kuwana, Japan.  Upon completion of training in traditional Japanese pottery methods, Michael moved to Mashiko and worked as an assistant to contemporary potter and sculpture Yoshiji Onuki.  He participated in many contemporary sculpture exhibitions including “Distans/igzistans” at Spiral Garden/Wacoal Art Center in Tokyo.

Following Japan received a MFA in ceramic sculpture from the University of New Mexico.  Currently lives in an old adobe home with fiber artist Cheri Reckers in the rural town of Jarales, New Mexico. Over the years they have acquired dogs and grown lots of wildflower.

Michael is a Lecturer at UNM Valencia teaching ceramics, photography and digital media. His work is exhibited and collected in museums and galleries throughout the US and Japan.
