UNM Civil Engineering Graduate Students Killed in Car Crash
The UNM School of Engineering experienced a tragic loss when two Civil Engineering graduate students died in a one car rollover accident late Sunday evening, June 6, in Sandoval County. A third student and two other people in the car were injured. They were returning to Albuquerque after a hiking trip to Tent Rocks, according to Sandoval County Sheriff’s officers.

Yi Huang
, a 24-year old master’s student, had been scheduled to complete her degree this summer. She began her graduate work at UNM in the fall of 2008 and she was studying pavement design and engineering.

Mohammad Minhaz Mahdi
began his master’s degree at UNM in the fall of 2009. He was from Bangladesh and was studying computational mechanics. Mahdi’s friends have arranged a viewing for him at 3 p.m. on Thursday at French Mortuary. more...

New Book Released by Professor Timothy Ross
The first edition of Fuzzy Logic with Engineering Applications (1995) was the first classroom text for undergraduates in the field; the second edition was published in (2004). Now updated for the second time, the new third edition (2010) features the latest advances in the field including material on expansion of the "Modified Learning From Examples" method using genetic algorithms, cognitive mapping, fuzzy agent-based models, and recent advances in approximate possibility distributions. CE Capstone Course Wins National Award
The Civil Engineering Department Capstone Course (CE 497/499) has been awarded a prestigious "Engineering Award for Connecting Professional Practice and Education" by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). This award recognizes engineering programs for engaging their students in collaborative projects with professional licensed engineers. UNM’s submittal for the award emphasized our Capstone Course’s unique integration of construction management and civil engineering skills into a design/build project format. We highlighted a project for a new wastewater treatment pond system for a rural community, which was mentored by our collaborators at Smith Engineering, Inc. The award includes a cash prize of $7500, which will be formally presented by NCEES to the Department in the coming weeks. More information about the award can be found at: http://www.ncees.org/Licensure/Engineering_Award.php

Professor Bruce Thomson receives 2010 New Mexico Earth Science Achievement Award
Civil Engineering Professor Bruce Thomson is the co-recipient of the 2010 New Mexico Earth Science Achievement Award "for outstanding contributions advancing the role of earth science in areas of applied science and education in New Mexico." Bruce was honored with the award in the rotunda of the state capitol building on February 4 during the legislative session. The award is sponsored by the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, and was established in 2003 to honor "champions of earth science issues vital to the future of New Mexico. more...

Dr. Tarefder appointed editor of IACMAG newsletter
Dr. Rafi Tarefder has become the Editor of the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics (IACMAG) Newsletter. IACMAG has been active for over two decades (http://www.iacmag.org/). IACMAG organizes international conferences about every three years; the 13th will be held in Australia in 2011. It participates in other activities such as cosponsoring the International Journal of Geomechanics published by the ASCE, cosponsoring other international and national conferences, symposia and short courses, and publication of the Newsletter. IACMAG Newsletter is published twice a year with items useful to the geomechanics community such as personal and community news, conference and course news, and technical articles including those for ongoing research at international institutions.

New Civil Engineering Faculty
Dr. Mark Stone joined the Department of Civil Engineering in the Fall 2009 semester. Dr. Stone is experienced with arid region hydrology, ecohydrology and ecohydraulics, stream and watershed restoration, climate change impacts, and international water resources issues. Before joining the CE Department, he served as a research professor at the Desert Research Institute in Nevada. He received his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from Washington State University in 2005. Please visit Dr. Stone’s website to view his full resume and project descriptions (http://www.unm.edu/~stone/).

NSF supporting PhD student's study

National Science Foundation (NSF) is supporting Courtney Vallejo’s Ph.D. study for the second year through its Graduate Research Supplements (GRS) program. NSF’s GRS program promotes increased participation of new Ph.D. students in all fields of engineering research with particular emphasis on individuals from underrepresented groups. Courtney is performing research in “Understanding the behavior of embankment dam under blast loading” under Dr. Rafi Tarefder’s supervision. Courtney’s project involves fundamental research in mechanics and materials modeling including blast load simulations.
